Magazine street driving in a nutshell.
One thing that’s so frustrating living in a city center is the pervasive belief among suburbanites that your neighborhood is nothing more than a consumer experience for them and that the city should bend over backwards to ensure they can speed as fast as possible on their way to buy treats in it.

Every so often it’s useful to answer some of the questions I get asked on here.

1. Yes they are.
2. Not the whole message, obviously.
3. In the garage, mainly.
4. No, it wouldn’t be practical. Sorry.
5. Purely random.

Cheers, T.

Saying “cloud migration” is an easy way to get all of your SREs to update their resumes.
A lot of cloud providers have compatible APIs or tooling. If not, wrappers are widely available. If AWS closed down then Microsoft, Google, Oracle, Alibaba, etc could easily pick up the slack. Many companies are already using multiple providers.

And it’s LA so they are just sitting in traffic, not like I-10 through New Orleans which is the director’s cut of Mad Max Fury Road.

"It's almost as if X seeks to divide us, divide us as a country, divide us into the extremes and that is deeply unhealthy and wrong, frankly," Ed Davey said.
Vital piece of investigative reporting from Sky. They've uncovered the X algorithm which feeds users extremist right wing material from the moment they join the site. It is a far-right radicalisation engine, by design.

The democratic socialist future of America will require millions of Leslie Knopes doing the thankless work of the bureaucracy required to provide services to the people. If you think people like her are "neoliberal shills," you're not really a democratic socialist, you're just a cosplayer.

When was the last time New Orleans had a mayor with more management experience than a handful of staffers? Was it Nagin?
I don’t think it’s actually normal for someone to become mayor of a city this large with so little management or executive experience, though. Again - he’s the obvious correct pick. But he’s an unusual candidate in a lot of ways
Yeah but I think it's pretty normal for people to become mayor without prior executive experience

Maybe that's bad! But it's not aberrant

Having access to a paint booth makes some projects much easier, it’s great to have a workshop like NOLAWorks available!

NOAA hurricane hunters flying aboard a P-3 Orion aircraft ("Kermit") are monitoring Hurricane Melissa as most aircraft steer clear. The storm poses a catastrophic threat to Jamaica and Haiti.

The crew are among the many federal workers working without pay during the US government shutdown.

The “better to ask forgiveness than permission” mentality in action
By proceeding with the demolition of the White House East Wing before seeking approval from federal agencies for a new ballroom, President Donald Trump forced the issue. It's a strategy known as "stake-driving."
How Trump Demolished the White House East Wing
By putting the demolition of the East Wing before the necessary approvals for his ballroom, President Donald Trump borrowed a tactic known as “stake-driving” to force an outcome.

The parking lot of the Home Depot in Harahan is always full of dudes in half tons buying light bulbs and one grandmother shoving half a yard of mulch into the back of her Subaru.
Yup. "Gonna get a huge pickup to drive to my office job" guys are the fastest growing demographic. Car companies call them "never/nevers", owners who answer on surveys that they never tow and never take the trucks off-road bsky.app/profile/dias...
And the beds of most of those pickups have never carried anything more than groceries.

Having been at a dozen startups, some successful and many not, I can assure you this does not mean 996. You can’t exert more effort than a better funded company, 996 means you don’t understand what your leverage is.

At a certain size this becomes a feature instead of a bug. The customer support story becomes “oh that thing that took out the big kids got us too”.
2/ Today's Amazon outage is the convergence of a few trends.

While Amazon has multiple regions, US-EAST1 is *the* region for a ton of services.

Second, more and more of the internet is moving to hosting by a handful hyperscalers.

So, when things go wrong there, they go wrong everywhere.

1) It can always get worse than what you see right now

2) It can stay worse for a lot longer than you might think
