Hello new followers - nice to have you here. Some things you can expect from me: posts relevant to Portland, as well as: expansive definitions of family, trans rights, disability rights, racial equity, environmental protections, and pictures of my service dog, of beautiful birds, and of my garden. 💐

Merry Christmas from NYC ☺️🎄💕

Happy Christmas Eve, everyone. ❤️🎄

Cinnamon streusel coffee cake is in the oven for Christmas morning (so I don’t have to do it tomorrow), then I’m baking a gingerbread cake in a house-shaped Bundt pan for X-mas Eve dessert, and I made Yorkshire pudding batter so it can refrigerate overnight - it smells so good around here! 🎄💕

I’m finding it highly amusing that screen reader accessibility tools are one way that people are discovering the contents of the administration’s apparently botched redactions. DEI for the win. 👏👏😂
(I tried copying and pasting into Notes; that worked, too!)
Alternately, if you have something that lets you see screen reader previews, the botched redactions show up there as well

My loves and I went for a beautiful, rainy winter solstice hike in the forest yesterday. 🌧️🌲
After washing all the mud off, Sprocket got to sample the holiday dog biscuits that his dog friend Dobby sent to our place yesterday (Dobby belongs to one of my besties).
Grateful. 🍪🐕‍🦺❤️🎄

It finally wasn’t raining in Portland today!
It had been a while since Sprocket and I had taken a walk during daylight hours; going out for a nice long walk with him and Dave today was restorative.
I adore the little Oaks Pioneer Church chapel in the Sellwood neighborhood. 💕🐕‍🦺💒

Sprocket loves retrieving and is able to bring me specific items like my meds, water bottle, and phone; getting the bag is very helpful since I can put anything in there and he only has to remember “bag.” Here’s my very good boy ignoring his toys and the cat to get what I asked for. #ServiceDog

I’m not paying the sub fee to read this ableist junk. But I can tell you that I have a condition where walking is much easier on my body than standing still (like in queues) and sitting is sometimes the only option I can manage at all. My disability varies in its presentation all the time. 👀

Everyone seems to hate AI, and I agree it’s technology that needs regulation and care. What I DO use it for? “Take this thing I wrote and shorten to meet character limits while retaining max original content.” or “Look through this long PDF and gather all these numbers to make these calculations.”

The anti-trans legislation (and anti-trans rhetoric in general) needs to stop.
I for one will always be supportive. Hang in there, everyone. 🏳️‍⚧️
Just now, a national trans healthcare felony ban for youth has passed the US House, with 10 year prison terms.

3 Dems crossed party lines to vote to jail providers.

4 GOP crossed party lines to vote against.

It is not expected to pass the Senate, where Dems hold filibuster power.

Story to come.

Happy holidays only to the grant funders who haven’t set deadlines for all the reports and applications to be submitted at the end of the year. 🙃😅

The front of this year’s holiday card from our family… ❤️🎄🐕‍🦺

I am not fond of Portland’s atmospheric rivers, since they make dog walking hard and cause our regular rivers to flood. The Christmas Ships still sailed up and down the Willamette last week despite the last round of atmospheric river rain causing a sewage overflow.
Christmas-y Poop River Parade! 💩🎄🛥️

As a grant writer for environmental causes, I’ve seen first-hand how funding for the environment often takes a backseat to medical research and human services. This article helps demonstrate why this is a problem; the environment is a HUGE influence on public health and quality of life.
Scientists Thought Parkinson’s Was in Our Genes. It Might Be in the Water
New ideas about chronic illness could revolutionize treatment, if we take the research seriously.

Think winter walks are miserable? They’re actually saving my sanity. Fresh air, filtered light, and unexpected fungi are keeping me going. Watch the video and tell me what keeps you grounded this time of year.

We made a visit to Teufel Holly Farm today so we can deck the halls with evergreens. ❤️🎄

Remember that “accessibility options upon request” nonsense I mentioned a few days ago for a city of Portland government function? Well, I can attend virtually now, but by golly, you’d better be a verified, unhealthy, Real Disabled Person if you dare to use Zoom, rather than just a lazy slob! 😒

Even if you believe that education is only about utility for future employment and not about building a flexible, capable brain, a broad base of understanding, and learning to connect with others, performing to a standard despite being uninterested or annoyed is a relevant skill for every job.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

We were working at the Wild Arts Festival this weekend and were so pleased by how accessible, beautiful, and welcoming the event was. From a quiet room for decompression to wide aisles and ample seating, it was probably the most pleasant event of its kind Sprocket and I have ever attended. Grateful.

This place halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow was recently for sale and I was seriously tempted. If I suddenly disappear, it’s possible I moved into an home in Scotland with a library and a conservatory that is a Mood. This one sold… surely others exist? 😍

If you tout your commitment to equity and inclusion and then say “accessible options can be explored upon request” - that is neither accessible nor welcoming to disabled folks. Virtual/hybrid meeting options, abundant seating, and water access should all be easy, advertised, and already available.

If the author had bothered to cite any actual statistics on disability, perhaps she would know that more than 1 in 4 adults have a disability in the US (28.7%, CDC). And having more than 20% of undergrads with a disability is pretty much right on for what is expected (PNPI). pnpi.org/wp-content/u...
