De donkere maanden van het jaar gaat productie van elektriciteit traditioneel gepaard met een hoge gemiddelde CO2-emissie per kWh.
België scoorde in december 2025 zelfs de hoogste maandwaarde, sinds het land rond 1980 kerncentrales in gebruik nam.

Elektriciteit goedkoper maken door (oa) taxshift naar gas (en hout) zou logischer zijn. Maar kom. Ook wel een gemiste kans om niet te vermelden dat er geen (lokale) fijnstofuitstoot is. Geen *lokale CO₂-emissies is in deze eigenlijk niet relevant.

A request I have made myself so many times in the past; review 3 papers for every manuscript that you submit. But many scientists now work in a context where that principle is very difficult to uphold.

After four months, the journal has not found a single reviewer for my PhD student's manuscript. The academic peer review system is broken.

I think we all should:

1. Review three papers for every one that we submit.
2. Promptly declined to review a paper when the request arrives.

A table with columns "Stage" and "Start Date" tracks the multi-month editorial progress of a manuscript submission from October 2025 to January 2026. The log begins on October 8, 2025, with "Preliminary Manuscript Data Submitted," and moves through several administrative phases including "Initial Quality Control" and the assignment of Editors and Associate Editors by late October. Starting on October 26, 2025, the status begins an oscillating cycle between "Contacting Potential Reviewers" and "Waiting for Reviewer Assignment," appearing multiple times through November and into early 2026. The most recent entries show "Contacting Potential Reviewers" on January 12, 2026, followed by a shift back to "Waiting for Reviewer Assignment" on January 13, 2026, indicating an ongoing search for peer reviewers. This has continued until the last update on January 26, 2026

I don't say this often but: I'm so proud to be a climate and environment reporter. We cover an issue that is vitally important to humanity and the natural world. 14 of my climate colleagues at the Post were laid off today and I'm devastated.

The new @unep.org science-policy panel for chemicals, waste & pollution is getting started at an interesting time.

Amid reports of the UN facing a budget crisis, delegates here are debating how often this body will meet, where its HQ will be & if all its bodies will work in all six UN languages.

De Belgen kunnen een handje helpen door hun verbruik te spreiden of verschuiven. Alles wat we op dit moment inschakelen van verbruikers zal worden opgewekt met NL of D kolenstroom (en bijhorende emissies)....al gaat het morgen niet veel beter zijn.

Dalende inkomsten* Rusland uit export van olie, gas en kolen; nu nog ruim €400 miljoen/dag. Bijna 50% daarvan uit China. Vooral door dalende prijzen, laatste maanden ook door lagere volumes.
