Western Ragwort is a native species with yellow flowers grouped into dense clusters, and leaves covered with long, sometimes cobwebby hairs. Growing in dry prairies in the south, the flowers provide pollinators like bees, flies, and butterflies with nectar in early spring. #WildflowerWednesday

The endangered Geyer’s Yellow Monkeyflower only grows in wetland habitats in the southwest, often near a natural spring. It has yellow, irregularly-shaped flowers that bloom mainly in August. The common name refers to the flower’s apparent similarity to the face of a monkey. #WildflowerWednesday

A yellow butterfly (a Cloudless Sulphur) is clinging to the side of a red flower called a Turk's Cap. The flower has a tight red bud with a very tall stamen protruding from its center. Part of the bush on which the flower is attached is showing and the background is blurred greenery. The photo was taken at Hagerman NWR in August.

The Marsh Bellflower grows in wet habitats, like meadows, marshes, and streamsides. The thin leaves have hooked hairs to help this plant climb up other plants to reach more light. Its tiny, white, bell-shaped flowers can be hard to find among the lush vegetation where it grows. #WildflowerWednesday

Early Meadow-rue is one of the rarer species of meadow-rue’s in Manitoba, being found only in the southeast. Unlike most wildflowers, this species produces separate male and female plants. As the flowers are wind-pollinated, they are unscented and lack colorful petals. #WildflowerWednesday

In the Elizabeth Street Garden today, sitting in dappled sunshine after the rain. This beauty isn't technically a wildflower, but honestly any flower in NYC feels a little wild and wonderful to me. 🌿

Abutilon striatum (Redvein Flowering Maple) in the Elizabeth Street Garden in SoHo, NYC. The flower is a gorgeous globe, bright red with yellow stripes, resembling a Chinese lantern. It looks like a flower that hummingbirds and butterflies might love. The leaves are bright green and look a little like marijuana leaves. Dappled sunlight falls on some of the leaves. You can almost hear the hummingbird. New York City, October 8, 2025.
