In 1995, she and her husband established the Lucille Teasdale and Piero Corti Foundation. This foundation ensures the continued survival of their hospital. Their daughter, Dominque, now a doctor, runs the foundation.

While she was given only two years to live, Teasdale lived for 11 years before her death in Italy on Aug. 1, 1996. Even at the end of her life, she was spending six hours a day to help patients.
Over the course of her life, she performed 13,000 operations.

Lucille Teasdale-Corti CM GOQ (January 30, 1929 – August 1, 1996) was a Canadian physician and pediatric surgeon, who worked in Uganda from 1961 until her death in 1996. With her husband she co-founded a university hospital in the north of Uganda.

Teasdale did not give up. She cared for patients, and worked all day to help others. She also worked to solicit funds not only for her hospital, but for the fight against HIV/AIDS. She also spoke out about the disease to raise awareness among the general public.

In 1985, after dealing with a recurring illness, Teasdale found out she was HIV positive. She believed she contracted the virus while performing surgery on an infected soldier. Bone fragments punctured her surgical gloves during the surgery.

By the 1980s, the hospital had expanded to be 482 beds, and included three health centres in nearby villages, a nursing school, and a health worker training program.
During this turbulent era of Uganda's history, the hospital was often attacked and raided by soldiers.

Teasdale and Corti married in December 1961. The next year, their daughter Dominique was born. Teasdale became known as Dr. Lucille to the locals. Some days she saw as many as 300 patients. During the Ugandan civil war, she treated soldiers regardless of sides.

While there, Corti travelled from Africa to visit her. He asked her to join him in Uganda to work as the hospital's only surgeon. Corti and Teasdale arrived in Uganda in May 1961. When they arrived, the hospital had 40 beds and six staff.

While she was interning in Montreal, she met Piero Corti, an Italian doctor. To complete her training to become a surgeon, she had to acquire training outside of Canada. No schools in the United States accepted her because of her gender, so she trained in France.

Lucille Teasdale was born on Jan. 30, 1929 in Montreal. Inspired by stories of missionary nuns working in China, she decided at the age of 12 to become a doctor to help others.
In 1955, she graduated with a medical degree from the Université de Montréal.
