A decade of practice and experimentation as a printmaker culminated in a suite of ten color prints made in 1890–91. Combining glaze-like, layered tones of aquatint with the textured surfaces of softground etching and the pure, clear outline of drypoint, Cassatt's innovative prints astonished and amazed her contemporaries. Camille Pissarro, himself a printmaker as well as a painter, admired the perfection of her prints, describing the colors as "subtle, delicate, adorable blues, fresh rose, etc." The result for him was "admirable, as beautiful as Japanese work."<em> In the Omnibus</em> is the only scene in the series that does not have an interior setting. The theme of travel was appealing to artists in 19th-century Paris—it represented a public space where people of different classes and genders were juxtaposed in close proximity. A quintessential modern life subject, Cassatt depicts a bourgeois lady accompanied by her baby and a nursemaid doing errands in the city. While the nanny and the child interact, the mother's gaze is directed elsewhere, wandering to the world beyond.

A mirror image of Cassatt's drawing of her mother knitting is found on the reverse of this double-sided sheet. To make the softground etching Knitting in the Library, Cassatt began with a copper plate prepared with a special soft etching ground and secured it to a sheet of paper upon which she drew in graphite. Wherever the pencil pressed into the ground, it adhered to the paper, thus creating the design seen here. The softground lines have a somewhat grainy texture and stains in the center fold-created by wrapping the sheet around the plate and on the blank paper at the right show green discoloration from the copper plate.

Cassatt exhibited prints for the first time in 1880 at the fifth Impressionist exhibition. As the decade progressed, she continued to show her graphic work alongside pastels and paintings. In the spring of 1890, at the Deuxième Exposition de Peintres-Graveurs, she showed a group of drypoints, remarkable in their delicacy and precision, as well as a group of prints made with a combination of aquatint and softground etching that appeared quickly drawn and spontaneous. After-Dinner Coffee is a study for a softground etching with aquatint.

In this working drawing for the softground etching and aquatint of the same title, Cassatt portrays her mother in a quiet moment of concentration with her handwork. Freely drawn, the study was used to block out main areas of light and dark with strong diagonal shading in graphite. Cassatt's skillful arrangement of forms may be found in the contrast between the curving lines of the figure and the armchair with the verticals and horizontals of the flanking bookcase. Cassatt's mother, Katherine Kelso Cassatt, had received a Continental education, spoke fluent French, and was extremely well read. She oversaw the rigorous education of her children and supported Cassatt's artistic career, living abroad with her daughter and often serving as a model.
