Actually, Greenland for Trump has a threefold purpose. First as you suggest minerals for the Oligarchs with kick back for him. Second it will cement Trump's place in history like Seward, "Trump the Great". Third it will benefit Putin by destroying NATO. Trump has already divided the USA.

@hcrichardson.bsky.social For you Politics Chat tomorrow please address Trump's underlying rationale for wanting to own Greenland: Is it a vanity project, the desire to leave a legacy of expanding the U.S., like Jefferson (the Louisiana Purchase) or Seward (Alaska)? Or something else? Thanks.

Historians agree that Trump's desire to acquire Greenland is a vanity project: He wants to be remembered for having expanded the U.S., like Jefferson (the Louisiana Purchase) or Seward (Alaska). But it comes at the unthinkable price of wrecking NATO & encouraging Putin.

William Seward, circa 1867. Had his purchase of Alaska not been deemed a "folly" it might have happened too. Turns out even before petroleum the U.S. had an insatiable thirst for the cetacean kind as well.

Read Dracula, loved Dr. Seward, so important he found love in the end.

_30 September._--When we met in Dr. Seward’s study two hours after dinner, which had been at six o’clock, we unconsciously formed a sort of board or committee. Professor Van Helsing took the head of the table, to which Dr. Seward motioned him as he came into the room. He made me sit next to him

If he wants to be remembered like Seward was for the Alaska purchase, I fully support his authorizing a bio entitled "Trump's Follies".

Yes, Seward is so very famous with states and buildings ans children named after him

I live near Seward Park in Seattle and I betcha 99.999% of the many people who frequent it have zero idea it's named after William Seward let alone that Seward was instrumental in purchasing the Alaska territory. So that's some legacy he's shooting for.

Trump will not be remembered as Thomas Jefferson or William Seward, he’s going to be remembered as the idiot who broke NATO, and gave Europe a mental breakdown because he didn’t win a Nobel prize!

In 1868, the USA completed the acquisition of another Arctic territory, Alaska, purchased from Tsarist Russia for approximately US$7 million, a gamble by Seward that provoked criticism and even jokes from those in the United States who considered this territory just a frozen piece of land, with no economic or strategic value. Is Dan Sullivan in Anchorage today? I swear I saw him in the Carrs off Huffman and Old Seward in the coffee isle. I was stunned and passed him, but gathered and turned and said “you disgust me” he kept walking. He is much slighter person than I thought. If it wasn’t Dan, sorry little guy.

Visited the Seward Park #Audubon Center today and got a few shots of a Red-Breasted Nuthatch doing nuthatch things. (if you have the chance, you absolutely should visit the center there, the gentleman working was incredibly friendly and informative)
