The bigger eucomis. This is one we planted several years ago next to a rose. The stalks on this one are about 2’ tall. Strappy green leaves about 4’ in diameter.
Pollinators love all the wee flowers.

Wikipedia: Eucomis is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae, native to southern Africa. Most species of this genus are commonly referred to as pineapple flowers or pineapple lilies. They are bulbous perennials with basal rosettes of leaves and stout stems covered in star-shaped flowers with a tuft of green bracts at the top, superficially resembling a pineapple – hence the common names.

Renewal buds positioned below the soil surface are better protected from aboveground distur-bances (e.g., fire and frost). Deeper bud placement, and therefore better protection, may incur costs that mustbe offset by the plant. The size of underground storage organs (USOs), such as bulbs, may be one countermea-sure to these costs. The Ledebouriinae (Scilloideae, Asparagaceae) are a group of bulbous geophytes foundpredominantly throughout disturbance- and drought-prone landscapes in sub-Saharan Africa. To examine therelationship between USO size and depth (a proxy for bud depth), Howard et al. (this issue, pages 299–306)excavated and measured bulb diameter and depth for 44 Ledebouriinae taxa in southern Africa. They recovereda positive relationship between bulb diameter and bulb depth in the soil (i.e., deeper bulbs were larger) acrossspecies. Within species, the positive relationship was maintained except for in a few taxa. These findings sug-gest that variation in USO size can be capitalized upon to allow for varying bud depth positionings in the soil.

Hyacinth plants are not edible and should be considered toxic. There are edible members of the Scilloideae family though, like the Tassel Hyancith (Leopoldia comosa)! This simple soup can be made quickly and with or without the pastry topping. Enjoy the (edible only) flowers!

Hyacinthus orientalis, the common hyacinth, garden hyacinth or Dutch hyacinth, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae, native to southwestern Asia, southern and central Turkey, northwestern Syria, Lebanon and northern Israel. It was introduced to Europe in the 16th century. It is widely cultivated everywhere in the temperate world for its strongly fragrant flowers which appear exceptionally early in the season, and frequently forced to flower at Christmas time.

A small pot of Drimiopsis. Round purplish bulbs sit at soil level. Tall tongue shaped leaves rise vertically from the bulbs along with a single flower stalk from each bulb.

A bulb-flower-type plant, one or two stalks of tubular blooms growing from the same point as the broad leafs spring from the ground. The flowers are a luminous tropical-beach turquoise. Another of these stalks of blooms. They grow like lupine, each blossom smaller and less developed as they get to the tippy top.

oh gosh now i'm in wikipedia going through the taxonomy.

both are order "Asparagales" family "Asparagaceae"

the agave is the subfamily "Agavoideae" whereas asparagus is the subfamily "Asparagoideae". so, cousins seems apt!

also there's subfamily "Scilloideae" the hyacinths! also hella-cool!
