Local pollution and overfishing are limiting the effectiveness of climate refugia for coral reefs, highlighting the need to reduce local stressors to support reef survival under climate change. doi.org/hbpbpf
Mapping where local pollution and fishing suppress climate refugia for world's coral reefs
As ocean temperatures rise due to climate change, corals and other sensitive organisms survive where temperatures are less extreme.

Caves filled with garbage. Overfishing the seas. Coal mining. CO₂ emissions. China is basically the biggest polluter in the world. But of course you’ll see cute videos of some isolated tiny green project somewhere.

What I would really like is for overfishing, pollution, invasive species, and climate change not to have destroyed commercial fishing for walleye and yellow fin perch in America but since that ship has sailed how about the WI choose-your-own-adventure old fashioned?

We got a peek at what @underthepole.bsky.social is doing in #Antarctica

One big immediate threat to Antarctic wildlife is the overfishing of krill!

When a #KeystoneSpecies like krill is at risk, the impact ripples through the entire ecosystem & threatens species that reply on it as a food source

Imagine how worse the overfishing is in waters where Chinese navy ships could protect them, letting Chinese fishing vessels plunder with even greater impunity.

Thank you for reporting on this overfishing issue. I was not aware that so many Chinese fishing boats were near South America.

At first I thought he was creating a monument to commercial fishing, and I thought, "Will it feature dead and now-extinct-due-to-overfishing species, plus pieces of commercial fishing boats he's blown up in the ocean?"

But he's actually opening up the Yellowstone of the ocean to pillaging.

What a Fkng pri*k, he’s destroying everything that’s established to help our environment from assholes like him.

If Republicans remain in office much longer, the planet will forever be compromised. Apparently they don't care if we have nothing safe to eat in a decade or two. Already the overfishing is rampant!

All I can think is 'poor bloody fish'. And is it a recent record or a genuine historical one?
Callum Roberts' books are excellent on the changes over time caused by overfishing and other harm.

No it isn't bad for the environment. Whole nations of indigenous people survived on salmon as a staple for thousands of years. What is bad are logging companies that destroy spawning streams, commercial salmon farms that infest wild populations with lice, & irresponsible overfishing.

There's no such thing as "appropriately managed fishing!" Fishermen are greedy destructive fucks who damage the ocean and deplete the wildlife. Protected areas help fish bounce back from overfishing. White men are fucking stupid.

the thing about being at the ocean is it can remind you that you're a part of nature and these judgy scolds insisting no one can interface with it in any form are making it harder to protect from real problems like global warming and overfishing

This plan avoids real limits on bycatch, letting factory trawlers keep catching large numbers of salmon without serious consequences. Subsistence, commercial, and sport fishing in Alaska continues to take the hit for overfishing by factory trawlers. Our families and communities pay the price.

I’ve been thinking of doing YT shorts of other Salmon Run related content instead of just exclusively posting overfishing scores.

Who knows but I’ve got ideas of what to do for salmon run content 👀

ikr ?!? very neat stuff once u look into it ♡ if im correct that fact is because they lack cartilage I think ! another related thing is that there's this small shark species (the dogshark) that is commonly eaten and rebranded as fish due to companies overfishing them a long time ago ^0^

He’s an idiot and how can one guy wreck so much?
We have literally wiped out some fish species in Massachusetts from overfishing during my lifetime. I can’t imagine what he’s going to do — let foreign ships dragnet our protected marine areas I bet. 🤬

The entire North Atlantic has been turned into an oceanic wasteland due to MASSIVE overfishing of what used to be some of the most productive waters in the world. Virtually all currently commercially available Atlantic Salmon is farmed because of this. He's killing the lifeline for those ecosystems.

in sum: chinook salmon in California are showing a vitamin deficiency linked to their diet becoming overly reliant on anchovies (which is probably due to climate-driven shifts in fish populations as well as overfishing/habitat destruction of herring, crab etc) www.biographic.com/a-mysterious...
