There are about 25 species of chipmunk in the world, and all but one (the Siberian Chipmunk) live in North America. I crossed paths with two species on my recent trip to Utah. The 1st photo is a Uinta Chipmunk (Neotamias umbrinus), and the 2nd is a Hopi Chipmunk (Neotamias rufus). #animals #nature

These chipmunks are brown in color with indistinct tawny stripes. There are five dark stripes and four lighter stripes on their back and two gray and three brown stripes on their faces. Their tail is grayish above and reddish below. This one is standing on flat, grey ground. It appears there are peanuts scattered around. The cheek pouches are somewhat full.

Had a fun afternoon yesterday exploring the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (Long Valley) - 3 sp of monkeyflower (guttatus, moschatus, Mimetanthe pilosa), 8 sp of birds, 2 sp of Penstemon (labrosus and grinnelli), and more!

Spent a major part of my weekend backpacking trip not getting a good pic of a Townsend's chipmunk (Neotamias townsendii), which you'd think would be easy to photo as they're populous and quite bold but which also NEVER STOP MOVING & seem to have supernatural attention awareness

When it’s time to mate, female Merriam’s Chipmunks (Neotamias merriami) call out to attract a partner—sometimes for up to 15 minutes. A nearby male will dash over, jump excitedly around her, and if she’s receptive, they mate for about 15 seconds.

I was up in the San Gabriel Mountains today and got these shots of a dark-eyed junco and a lil chipmunk called a “Neotamias.” (I’m a terrible picture taker; apologies for the blur.) All the animals were busy to today, like a Narnia tale.

Kid doing a school presentation on chipmunks and turns out the taxonomy of the critters is a mess. Finnish and English wikipedia disagree, English wikipedia disagrees with itself: Tamias is said to have only one species, but then Neotamias with 23 species is ”often considered a subgenus of Tamias”.

#Neotamias is a genus of #chipmunks within the tribe Marmotini of the squirrel family. It contains 23 species, which mostly occur in western North America. I always get excited when I see one of these scurrying around.
