#monofenestratan
In September, David Hone described a new species, Makrodactylus oligodontus. I asked Gemini (pro version) and ChatGPT (free version) to read the paper and look at the sketch I uploaded (from the paper) and create a realistic image. It took them both 2 minutes. ChatGPT's is the better one.

"monofenestratan," of course, is the clade of pterosaurs that achieved flight fly by jumping out of a single window
Say hello to Makrodactylus oligodontus, a new non-pterodactyloid monofenestratan from the Mörnsheim Formation, Late Jurassic of Germany!

Coupled with a short tail, this is likely a very derived early monofenestratan and probably close to Skiphosoura and the pterodactyloids. There's no phylogeny in this paper, but it has been coded as part of another project so should appear in a formal phylogeny before too long.

But the very short version is that this new critter is really quite small for an early monofenestratan, in fact the smallest thing that is at, or very close to, adult size we have seen so far. It's also got an unusually small number of (rather long) teeth.

Rather unexpectedly, a paper of mine has just dropped. Say hello to Makrodactylus, a new early monofenestratan from southern Germany. This was published with Rene and Bruce Lauer (www.lauerfoundationpse.org) and Freddie Spindler.

Skiphosoura bavarica skull diagram.
I made this skull diagram for the original description and it did end up being incorporated into the other skeletal diagrams but never shared it standalone, so here you go.

It's just incredibly funny to me that the type locality of the putative oldest monofenestratan pterosaur is a place called shredded cheese.

"According to the researchers, Melkamter pateko marks the earliest worldwide occurrence of a monofenestratan pterosaur, predating the currently oldest member of this clade by at least 8 and probably 10 million years."

🚨 NEW PTEROSAUR! 🚨

Skiphosoura bavarica was a monofenestratan #pterosaur from the #Solnhofen, and it’s very important to our understanding of the #evolution of the pterosaur body plan!

Please consider reposting my art if you can! Your interest means a ton as I start posting here more!

A new genus and species of monofenestratan pterosaur has been identified in Argentina! Fun fact: the ability to fly has evolved independently four times throughout history! This includes insects, birds, bats, and pterosaurs!
