Jules Weinheimer made the trek to New Orleans and continues to record and produce in his cozy bedroom studio, just as he has for years being surrounded by a family of musicians. Jules began creating in the realm of hip hop beats, now finding his influence in blending this genre with his love for artists like Alex G and Wilco, and his inherent devotion to romantic lyrics and lush instrumentation. Giovanni Ventello is an indie-folk rocker from Lawrence, Kansas now based in New Orleans. As a Kansan, raised on Americana and the clever but simplistic lyrics of John Prine and Gillian Welch, Giovanni writes about the unremarkable, the monotonous, the mundane: A sock without a match and pile of old shoes become a vivid and vulnerable narrative about anxiety and autonomy. From lonesome acoustic ballads to roaring walls of distortion the music embellishes the story, carefully cradling the lyrics in gentle ambience and whining steel strings. Whether performing solo or alongside a spectacularly ragged rock band Giovanni’s songs are destined to resonate with anyone who can find significance in the wearisome. Huge fan of this band + all they’ve done — but THIS record in particular was life-changing. Not just music, vocals, lyrics, arrangements…but the PRODUCTION. An atmosphere so thick you could just immerse yourself in it.

Truly wish they’d done more of that vs the dry indie production that followed.

I lean towards indie pop rock, Florence and Hozier, or upbeat pop (think fast remixes) so brazilian funk tends to land in a in-between tempo that don't mesh with me, plus the lyrics are not an attractive usually, but given the amount of music out there it's natural that I will find a song I like.

Many little miracles, deliberately layered to evoke how music works in the same way as dreams; unlocking the subconscious mind, or the soul, and elevating life itself. Or, more prosaically, justifying my love. For pop. From the start, Georgia Ellery’s disembodied voice and the ‘Baby Batter’ sample lull you into a childlike dreamstate. But that vulnerability is simply a precursor to intimacy. “I believe in dreams… do you?” Georgia sings in the chorus, and it’s exquisite, reaching back through time to female indie icons while rejoicing in the present moment. The lyrics are sensual yet subliminal: ‘Woom (womb) Room’, “dreaming in the dark”, “see you on the other side”. Meanwhile Taylor Skye has unleashed the rayguns over that first chorus, making me grin like a child at Christmas. There is nothing I would change about this record’s structure. Every disparate element just flows, like the best dream you ever had, made real. Taylor’s string break two minutes in, after the second chorus, into Georgia’s “Baby. You know I could go on, so play me one more… song.” And a long percussion break before the main melody picks up again. Then, of course, the bit which seals 12 points: “Imagine I’m Madonna. Imagine I’m the Madonna…” Because, yes, it’s a sexy record, without ever being crude or obvious. There’s no denying the outro: “wanted to feel what you feel inside”, “want you to know what I know in my mind”, “wanna see what you see through your eyes”. If we are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep, then come to her you must. On the third floor. Speedy. Quick. Before your eyes close. It’s the Greatest Hits, and she / ain’t tryna hide it… THE Madonna, dressed in pink. From the video for 'Material Girl', a 1985 single. As someone who is not particularly interested in lyrics, it’s not that important to know the words being song - a lot if my current fave music has this appeal - be it incomprehensible metal, Spanish indie, J-rock, K-pop, power metal in German - language has become less of a barrier

Most of this album is really good, produced well and fits the moody electronica vibe Gabu is going for. The songwriting and lyrics are really, really bad though, and it greatly hinders this album.

Cover art for "All These Faces" by GABUISLOST (2025) I’m going to review this very basically because I think there’s one huge issue that’s holding Gabu back. The production is great, Gabu’s voice fits well and this honestly goes places where I’ve never heard indie electronic music go before. I have three songs saved in my Spotify likes, and that’s more than most albums get. Nearly all the points off for “All These Faces” comes from the juvenile songwriting and lyrics. Oh my god, it’s embarrassingly bad. Much of the songwriting feels like it was made for a poetry assignment in ninth grade. The absolute best example is Gabu taking the “your love is like a drug” cliche and not only using it but making a WHOLE song about it. Jesus Christ. I'm waiting to accompany my kid to a telehealth appointment, and the 'waiting room' has different playlists you can choose from.

They're all incredibly bad, and none of them have lyrics, though some of them feature 'hey!', 'yeah!', and what I can only assume is Simlish.
