My month of self-indulgence is over.

I started it carried away and became more so. Which fits, as they started brilliantly and became more so.

Anyway, here's 'The Whole Lot(ta History)' Edition.

The best episode of his podcast is the one where him and co-host Dorian lynsky admit they did not know what neoliberalism was and they thought it was just a word used as an insult by online leftists. Dorian linsky blocked me for bringing this up once. 💀

2006 was ofc peak salad days for the Sensibles: between the Invasion of Iraq that they could justify away & the 2007/8 Great Financial Crisis that exploded all the contradictions of their worldview that they had refused to recognise, despite many people expending lots of energy to get them to notice

AI is being promoted, marketed and force fed to us by the rich and powerful in order to make us more productive, compliant slaves. It represents the death of human creativity, of the struggle to improve ourselves.

It is a form of mass-lobotomisation on an unprecedented scale.
The government’s suggestion that rolling out 20 minute courses on writing “AI“ prompts, sponsored by Google, Microsoft and Amazon, is somehow comparable to the founding of the Open University (the Wilson government‘s, & Jennie Lee’s, proudest achievement), is an insult to our human intelligence.

And there was a big Newsround special with the great John Craven a few days later. Somewhat depressingly, this is far better reporting than you get on a lot of mainstream, adult news telly programming now

CNN reporting that a week before Alex Pretti was killed, 5 agents tackled him and he suffered a broken rib. CNN says he stopped his car after he saw ICE agents interacting with a family on foot and began to blow his whistle. Source tells CNN Pretti believed “That day he thought he was going to die”

"The person you see in your mind lying in that street is still a child. I’m sure his mother feels that way, too, or she sees him at every age all at once, including those he did not live to see."

I wept reading this. I'm glad it was written.

Maybe offer everyone free media literacy training instead.
It would be far more useful.
BREAKING: Free AI training will be offered to every adult in the UK, with short courses to teach people how to use simple AI tools effectively in the workplace.

Mel isn’t saying much today that’s notably crazier than the stuff she was saying five years ago, or fifteen. All of her colleagues have always fully understood she is a crackpot fascist, and you’ll notice this has never harmed her career. Unlike the baleful menace that is, say, Gary Lineker.

however, sadly, the paper pitches this as a "trust issue" but people are right now to trust this stuff! Also complete failure to recognise that tools need to be worthy of trust, not that people should give their trust more freely

It’s heartwarming to see the MAJORITY of Cambridge Uni students & societies are speaking up for trans-inclusion when a nasty little TERF soc pops up with an anti-trans (disguised as ‘free speech’) agenda!

Watch how this hate group gets boosted by the UK media (her mum is an Observer columnist!) 😖
Students launch women’s society excluding trans women
The move has drawn significant criticism from a number of student groups, with CULC describing it as 'an assault on the trans community'

A story is doing the rounds about TERFs confronting two trans women in the Hippodrome Casino women’s bathroom.

What isn’t mentioned is that anti-trans hate group “Not All Gays” had hired a room there, so the venue was swarming with ‘gender critical’ transphobes vying for a confrontation!😣

Okay, so this now looks a lot like the Slippin’ Jimmy thing from Better Call Saul: walk into the bar then do a flying header into the fire extinguisher, and phone your lawyer. Again, it’s a nexus of: well-connected wingnut cranks, the Times newspaper and billionaire legal funding.

These cars should be banned in the UK, there is no reason for them to exist.

A fair way of ensuring we tax road use would be to tax by car weight as well as emissions - with cars this heavy taxed into oblivion.

this is bleakly funny, but also - people at the NYT, BBC News etc DO think it's an exciting time for politics, that's really one of the fundamental causes for this, they think it's a fucking parlour game
Twice this week when meeting a new person I've gotten an excited "Wow, it must be an exciting time to be a political scientist!" and both times I've answered "Not really. That's like telling someone it's an exciting to be a surgeon when there's a 63 car pileup on the highway."
