#larp,#safety
I hope more cons follow suit. It's tacky, overdone, and needlessly edgy as-is. I know these people are going to bitch and moan about it, but they need to get over it and stop being selfish. People's comfort and safety matters a LOT more than you getting to wear your stupid lame-ass Cop-LARP gear.

I have absolutely no idea why, but for some reason, whenever I load up Youtube and I look at the shorts section, I for some reason get popped up with shorts that give genuine fucking good information about gun safety and gun knowledge without needing a fucking license.

Or just cool LARP gun demos.

I'm also working on safety tools right now (though from a different angle) and came across this quote today which I thought you might find useful - it's from the 2012 States of Play Knutepunkt book, and whilst it's larp theory I think it's widely applicable (quote in replies for length):

We use them in our LARP tents when we want to light them up. Mainly because we are not allowed to use actual candles due to fire safety. Good for ambience pretty terrible for light.

This was a fascinating discussion that went in unexpected directions. I did not anticipate learning how the LARP and BDSM communities share safety tools.

All this meant the episode went long, and I had to cut some interesting stuff. The unedited version on Patreon is 40 minutes longer.

I just reread my #larp submission for blackbox cph 26. When asked about safety tools, past me wrote:

This is a story about breaking free. It is an act of rebellion. The path to safety is to play the larp.

I wrote a workshop for a larp I'm running in November with assistance from a friend and I'm so, so pleased. I love boundary and safety workshops that emphasize agency, curiosity, and kindness.

Hey big shout out to all the people who spent time designing LARP safety tools, because not only does it make LARPing sound more fun, but they're also easily adaptable to Discord, where I did not expect to need them.

Unfettered LARP w/o Safety or Bleed Tools can very much consume people’s lives and minds. The Cop RP is especially disturbing. It toxic LARP culture in an entirely new medium. I hope those folks learn sooner or later how to engage in their hobby in a healthier way.

This is similar to my rule on LARP Safety People™

If they are running a LARP Safety team then they are usually great people who are under-appreciated, but if they go around setting themselves up as a LARP Safety Person™, making a lot of statements about it, appearing on panels, etc…

…there's a […]

Oh good just in time for everyone to larp as process safety engineers.
The very annoying thing about Venezuela is if you have been paying attention for more then 2 weeks, you instantly can tell almost no one has done any sort of reading or research on this here website.

DAILYISH DRAW

creepy worm

Spending the weekend at a larp as an emotional safety person (first time!). Managed to draw this little guy after a wild day of packing, driving and getting the lay of the land.

Pencil on drawing paper.

It feels to me like Trump and RFK Jr. are trying to LARP being the heroes of a second thalidomide crisis.
(While at the same time having dismantled many of the safety mechanisms once in place at the FDA to potentially stop something like the thalidomide crisis from re-occuring.)

Every larp I've been to has had a dedicated team of "safety hosts"; a group of people who handle the fallout and care after unsafe or unpleasant play, should a player need it.

How do you handle this in a trpg setting? It's easy to point to the classic safety tools and x-cards, but bleed is *strong*
September 16, 2025 at 11:26 AM
My point of this thread is: how do you handle safety in a setting where comfort can be limited?

A larp can be anywhere from 5-400 people. Your ability to select which groups you interact with, and what play you want to find, is a lot more open than when you and 1-6 friends sit around a table.
September 16, 2025 at 11:26 AM
There's also an element where a lot of TT players have been subjected to abusive play environments where bleed is used as a weapon. That's less common in larp scenes because they have a stronger culture of emotional safety.

Comparisons to Nordic LARP are disingenuous. In that space the designer is almost always facilitating and it will never be run outside that setup (and if it is, probably there will be personal relationships/support). Bleed/safety tools sit at the facilitation level again, it just appears otherwise.

When I designed Desaparecides, my larp about the fascist regime in Argentina 177-83, I built safety into every part of the game, not just check in and debrief. This is the effort it takes to write games on difficult themes responsibly.
Also I get it. Some folks don't understand the outcomes of games. Even the best of us fuck up. I know from experience. However, please I am begging you to read and ask questions of designers and look into what it means to take care of your players when they are playing on difficult themes.

I turned the LARP I wrote years ago into a pamphlet! I’m going to be selling it at @milkcomicfest.bsky.social later this month

We'll be covering everything from small, conceptual blackbox larps to multi-day extravaganzas.

More and more immersive experiences/theatre are learning about co-creation and safety mechanics and tackling challenging subjects from Nordic larp, and the entire field stands to gain.

I made LARP boffer swords for my spouse and I to carry to a convention as our "Unpainted Miniatures" cosplay.

I love them. I forgot how relaxing it was to craft these and how fun holding a finished product was.

Also, these should pass any basic safety checks.

Moral of the story: if you are running a LARP, establish safety protocols everytime

The one LARP I ever attended that ended with health & safety issues was a Gilmore Girl LARP so I would offer a word of caution
