On this day in 1975, an estimated 90% of Icelandic women participated in a "Women's Day Off" (or Kvennafrí), walking out of both paid and unpaid work to protest wage discrepancies and unfair employment practices.

On this day in 1975, around 90 percent of women in Iceland went on strike. They protested unequal pay by refusing to do housework, child rearing, or the duties of their paid positions. The next year, Iceland's parliament passed a law guaranteeing equal pay for women.

Tens of thousands of women in Iceland, including their Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, are refusing to work on Tuesday.

The "kvennafrí", or women's day off, has been called in protest at the gender pay gap and gender-based violence.

Women in Iceland going on strike for a day to protest pay gap, violence, &
to call attention to gender inequality.

It is expected to be the largest walkout by Icelandic women since *24 Oct 1975. ✊🏽

*which prompted the parliament to pass a law guaranteeing equal pay.
