It's got something called hydropneumatic suspension that you mostly only see on Citroëns and heavy military equipment like tanks - shock is absorbed by compressing spheres of nitrogen gas at the wheels and then transferred between them using hydraulic fluid lines

Oh - never heard of one of those … nearly hurt myself.. scraping the bottom of my brain trying to match that photo to a machine with hydropneumatic suspension !!!

i’m sure it won’t happen to me though

Not sure if "'Ropean" means European, but do you happen to know if French fighter jets have hydropneumatic suspensions, turn signals on the dash, and urine colored headlights?

Oh, and Yvonne de Gaulle’s reaction after getting out of a bullet-riddled Citroën DS hovering upright on three wheels by the magic of hydropneumatic suspension being hoping the frozen chickens she’d put in the boot were okay.

Good video about hydropneumatic or adjustable tank suspension. It's mostly centered on a game but I think most of it's relevant for the prototypes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWWe...

THE SLUM SPORT: Chapter 6; When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going

@mfc.co.uk legend Tony Mowbray talks padlocks, park pitches, nightclubs & hydropneumatic Citroën BXs - all of this before he was required to visit the moon.

C5 is a completely different model :)
But yes, it was the last hydropneumatic Citroen.
I remember covering it for CCB's news in 2017.

I would expect the S Class to be better - it was something to the tune of £30-40k more expensive for a model with Airmatic.

But then history, M-B licencing hydropneumatic, journalists not understanding farting wobbly fanboy suspension, foam foam wibble forum hatred.

An archetypal French market setting showcased the GSA estate car in Club trim. With hydropneumatic suspension and a low loading height it made a particularly good estate car. After 1982 the GSA range was withdrawn from some markets to make way for the new BX, but sales in France lasted until 1986.

Do modern NYC systems also incorporate a hydropneumatic tank, or some other way of boosting pressure, or is the water pressure terrible in these old buildings?
September 15, 2025 at 4:21 AM
Taller buildings however can’t rely solely on hydropneumatic tanks and also have gravity tanks in the middle of the building because the pressures required to pump to the top of the building exceed the pressure rating of the pipe material.
September 15, 2025 at 2:06 AM
The reason why you don’t often see these on newer buildings (NYC has plenty of exceptions) is because of the development of hydropneumatic tanks, which maintain the water pressure after the pump has turned off, due to air on the other side of the diaphragm inside the tank pushing back on the water.

if citroen isn’t your favorite car manufacturer i just don’t know what to tell you

*very french accents or actual french*

“how do we communicate the concept of our revolutionary new hydropneumatic suspension”

“avec a ballon tied to a poisson of course”

“magnifique!”

“time for vin!”

Everything is relative compared to a W140 🤪

One thing I learned in the process of buying and owning two 129s is: go early, KE-Jetronic cars, and you avoid the wiring loom issues. And, as much as I love hydropneumatic suspension, cars without ADS will always be a safer ownership proposition.

3/9 Positive points cont.:
- Impressive production facility with experienced manufacturer.
- Production methods could easily be transferred to Switzerland.
- Simple and effective hydropneumatic suspension system.
- Tank has an auxilliary engine.

Well, it is a Citroën, with hydropneumatic suspension so there are a lot of Things that can (and will) go wrong!

Also available was what the brochure described as the 'D-21 station wagon'. Citroën's unique hydropneumatic suspension was a boon for this model, with the brochure noting it meant the car 'doesn't fishtail as do other wagons carrying a heavy rear load'.

At the base of the GS range Citroën offered the 1015cc GSpécial, which had first introduced the world to this remarkable design, with its aerodynamic six-light body and sophisticated hydropneumatic suspension. In addition to the saloon model, the GSpécial was also available as an estate car.

Looks like Nio has perfected Citroen's hydropneumatic suspension ideas. I'd love a drive in this car.
