Hi yes hello as someone who likes both Hien & Yotsuyu I was very annoyed with how the english Localization fucked this up in particular, and while I cannot speak on the other common (and very valid) critiques of Hien, I did at least want to mention this part for future reference.

for clarity I don’t have any issue with people liking Hien and I do really like the characterisations of him from mutuals, however the FFXIV writers have so much internalised bullshit they will never work through that stops me from being able to like him in the base narrative

this may be an unpopular opinion but I actually didn’t like the short story with G’raha and Hien… and it’s not even fixable to me because SB is so heavily written through the lens of the writers’ own irl internalised Japanese imperialism/apologia that the whole thing is just like

“You will harm yourself if you keep that up,” he chastized gently as the prince struck the same spot again and again. “Variety will spare your muscles the strain.” Hien stopped and turned around, angrily shoving his katana into its sheathe. “Will you deny me even this reprieve, then? I thought cultivating strength in battle another of my kingly duties.” Gosetsu merely watched him for a moment, unphased by his nasty tone, and Hien shrank a little with shame. He wiped his forehead. “I apologize, my friend. Today has been… Frustrating.”

I do wanna mention that if you see me talk about Doma, that I generally HC the various Chinese influences being much more prominent. I also write there being a lot more political intrigue amongst nobility, which is part of rewrites I have for Hien & 4.2-4.3 rewrites.

"Mysterious Phimosis by Hien Pham" Hien Pham draws in a lushly rendered style that alternates between realistic illustrations and simplified cartoons in textured pencil lines. He uses the full spectrum but with a noir-twist for this comic. He is a Southeast Asian cisgender heavyset man with a short, bushy, black beard, fuzzy body hair, and glasses. He is dressed as a noir detective in this comic. Hien is a detective at a desk shrouded in shadow as a client comes to him. Narration: Hot air billowed through the doorway when he walked in. I could have mistake the confines of this office with the steamy sauna walls on my day off. I could use a day off. Narration: You can see it in his eyes, nerves disguised as confidence. The kind of confidence that stops a bear dead in its tracks. The imagery is split between two panels, one half being Hien the detective's face, and the other half is the client. The client is a dark skinned man with a thick built, a bushy beard and wavy short dark hair. He has a very pleasant smile and demeanor. Narration: Perhaps out of admiration. Perhaps out of fear. Or, for a Bear like me, perhaps out of lust. A close-up of the client undoing his pants and we see his hairy stomach and a bit of his underwear. Narration: Soon enough, he sheds his layers, and the days case unfurls before me. From behind Hien the detective, we see the client in the doorway in shadow and the title of the comic in a cursive text "The Mystery of Phimosis" Hien's hand grabs for a binder on a bookcase. He says "I only have first-hand experience with phimosis as a cis guy, so I will be focusing on that today! Let's take a look at the evidence!" Items from the binder are strewn about on a wooden table. Hien continues "Phimosis is a condition in which the foreskin cannot retract past the glans. Most penises are born with phimosis, which solves itself by the teenage years. But, in some cases, the foreskin remains tight past adolescence!" On the table are diagrams, polaroids (these are all illustrated of course) and notes showcasing penises not being able to expand past the foreskin. A chibi Hien waggles his finger with a caution sign and colours behind him and says "Phimosis could also be caused from physical trauma from forcibly retracting the skin before it's ready! Never EVER pull a foreskin back when it hurts to do so!!!" The client ponders this and says "Honestly, I'm pretty content with my willy... I'm just hoping to clean under the hood more quickly and efficiently now that I'm more sexually active." Hien the detective pulls out a ball of red string and exclaims "Great! Let's see how we can unravel your phimosis!" A splash panel showing a detective's corkboard with evidence tacked to it and the red string connecting them all. Hien speaks over it saying "In some of the more extreme cases, doctors might suggest full or partial circumcision! But, most of the time, manual at-home-stretching is all it takes! There are a few stretches you can find on the web, but my favourite is the pull-and-hold" Start soft! Showing a checkmark over a phallic penis and an X on an erect one. Pull and Hold, showing fingers slowly pulling on the foreskin of a penis towards their body. The head of the penis peeking out! CAUTION! Pull back as far as you can without hurting! 30 seconds. Release repeat 5-6 times. Stretching aids: + hot shower + lube Optional: Doctor-prescribed steroid cream! TWICE/day Detective Hien tipping his detective hat and says "Progress is very slow and gradual. I'm talking several months minimum! And it can take up to half a year before you can pull your foreskin back past the glans! Just like any good stake-out, the key to success lies in patience and persistence." A shot of the client in the shower, stretching out his foreskin slowly and gently. The client and Hien laying in a bed together. The client looking at his phone and Hien, still in his detective outfit, smiling and hugging a little detective bear. Hien says "Make it a part of your daily showers and winding down in bed! Build a habit you can stick to. Don't forget to take pride in any difference you make! No matter how small." Silhouettes of the client and Hien, very small, and hanging from a large penis forskin. Hien says "Work with your foreskin at its own pace. After, all it's a marathon, not a sprint!" The silhouettes fall off the penis once the head reaches past the foreskin and pops out! Hien says "Again, do NOT push yourself too eary, too fast! Too much force and OOPS! Your skin might get trapped behind your glans in a bad situation called Paraphimosis! Consult a doctor as fast as you can before the whole covert operation goes bust!" The silhouettes look on to the mountainous erect penis in the background. Hien says "There's an exhilaration in taking control over your body. Hold onto that power, and soon enough, the case will be solved!"

Bram and Hien rest their foreheads together in the Pendants. Hien's hair has been cut shorter and he's wearing garb common of the First, as though he's been spirited away there. Bram holds the back of Hien's head while Hien caresses his cheek. Bram and Toshi (a raen man who is Bram's childhood best friend and was his first boyfriend) sit near a firepit on a starry night. Bram rests his head on Toshi's shoulder while Toshi wraps an arm around him. Bram is much younger and clean shaven. A portrait of Hien standing in the Doman enclave, wearing a simple yellow dogi.
