#Wood Turtles are pretty secretive animals, and unless they need to cross bare ground to get from point A to point B, they usually hang out in places where they are hard to see.

Currituck County, NC.
A Slider Turtle, Trachemys scripta, floating in a retention pond. Horizontal slit pupils highlight a striped face and upturned pointed nose. Ribbit. American Bullfrog sitting partially submerged in a pond, with aquatic vegetation all around it. Large eyes and large ear tympani highlight this species. A smol Green Treefrog almost hidden in green and brown vegetation. Front portion of an Eastern Ribbon snake, lying very still in a dirt path hoping that I didn't see it.

Beneath and beyond out-of-focus, shiny-damp violet leaves, a woodland box turtle with very bright orange scales on its front leg. It looks like it's shutting its eyes and starting to withdraw into its shell, like maybe if it can't see me, then I can't see it either.

I just love the fact I get to work with this incredible species that lives right where I do! This light color is unusual in Texas Tortoises. They usually have more of the darker scales with some spots of the cream color. This one has a very unique coloration! #herps #tortoises #herpetology 🐢

A pond slider (Trachemys scripta) mostly underwater but peaking their head out to look right into the camera asking for food. The turtle is mostly a dark brown color but has greenish-yellow lines on their scaly parts.
