Good morning, Bluesky! I recall when I was utterly terrified of these swamp puppies. Ignorance is not always bliss, especially considering how remarkable they really are. Not that I recommend trying to snuggle one.

We visited Independencia island in Peru some weeks ago. Besides beautiful landscapes, we were impressed by how the local population of Microlophus lizards illustrates the island syndrome. Males were large, colorful, highly territorial, bold, and most missed fingers/toes. Densities were high.

Found in China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Constructs foam nests above standing water.

Max size for males 5.3 cm (2.1"), for females 7.9 cm (3.1").

Considered Least Concern by the IUCN.

The Frog 🐸 of the Week is the Iberian Tree Frog (Hyla molleri) from France, Portugal, and Spain. Once considered a subspecies of the Common European Tree Frog, they were lifted to full species status due to genetic differences between the two species.

Fossil fuels are the source material for most plastics + for the chemicals added to them. As firms lose their iron grip on energy production, indications are they're shifting to using oil + gas for plastic production, which has more than doubled since 2000 + looks set rise 40% in the next 10 years.

Max. length 100 cm (39.4").

Found on the island of New Guinea as well as on several islands in the vicinity.

Eats large insects/invertebrates, small birds and mammals.

Considered Least Concern by the IUCN.
