About .8” long (2cm), shiny black body with distinct ivory-colored markings, especially on the face, thorax, and abdomen, and a very narrow, "stalk-like" first segment of its abdomen. Its wings, folded lengthwise, like a half-open fan, are metallic and have a bluish-brown tint.

Didn't want to totally miss out on #InverteFest this year, so here are some last minute pics. It's been a pretty great year for me in this department. Between the gardens at work, my ever-growing native garden space, and summer travel, I've seen a lot!

These were all taken at Brookside Gardens.
A four-humped stink bug (Brochymene quadripustulata). It is a mostly grayish, brownish insect with small black and orange spots all over it. It is sitting on a long, thin leaf that is also covered in spots. A Gray Hairstreak butterfly (Strymon melinus) sitting on a yellow rudbeckia flower. It is a primarly light gray butterfly, but around the rear edges of its wings, it has two rows of white and black spots and dashes. On the back edge of its hind wing, it also has a bright orange and black eye spot. It is resting facing away from the center of the flower. A Fraternal Potter Wasp (Eumenes fraternus) with a death grip on the neck of an unfortunate caterpillar. It's mostly black, with very pale yellow markings on her edges. Its thorax and the end of its abdomen are quite bulbous and lightly pitted and haired. The caterpillar is a bright pale green, with faint yellow stripes. A bright blue dragonfly, a Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis), maybe? Sitting atop a dried up flower stalk. Its eyes are a bright spectrum of blues and greens. Its thorax has thick black stripes atop a light green. Or thin light green stripes on black? Who's to say.

Absolute shitty pictures. But I think one is a Black and Gold (auticomus) - biggest bumblebee I've ever seen in my life. And the other...maybe a Southern Plains (fraternus) but that one is a bit rare here in Michigan. #bees

I went to take a picture of my newly blossomed sunflower and saw the biggest bee I've ever seen. I Google Lens'd it and it says it's a 'Bombas Fraternus' bee. I got a pic of a regular bee beside it just to see the size difference. Not messing with him! He can take all the time he wants. I'll wait.

I've also been seeing a bunch of these - fraternal potter wasps (Eumenes fraternus). They're all about the mountain mint. The females craft neat little spherical pots from clay soil, within which they place their eggs. I haven't noticed those yet, but I'll be looking for them.

This Bombus fraternus m (I'm pretty sure) charged me the other day for DARING to photograph him. Apparently they really mean it when they say you shouldn't wear white/bright colors around bees. He didn't charge when I was wearing brown!

Potter wasps are pretty common around here, but I'd never seen a nest until today. Check out this fabulous bit of insect made masonry on the stem of a plant. It's amazing.
