the thing with DS2 is simply how many bad decisions culminate on a very annoying experience for the player, be it a newcomer or someone already into the souls-like genre
if it was only the fogwall i-frames, or, the cumulative penalty for death, and so on, it'd be fine

yeah theres a few, but with those in particular you can always just spawn at the bonfire anyways and it lets you after, plus the few areas you cant summon are so small i honestly forgive it, unlike ds1 where every step there is a new fogwall you cant go pass lolll

I'm sure there were more subtle ways to keep the player on track than throwing up a giant fogwall and going "you are not allowed yet".
Earlier it was blocking off a side path and I assumed it could just be magic I'll need something to break later, but no. it's just a "stop, no passing allowed" sign
