I think I realized what gives me the ick for battle royale/Dayz clones.
Snipers.
I cannot find the patience to wander aimlessly just for a sniper to win, not even an encounter, 10/10 times.
Snipers in games in general feel too OP solely because they disincentivize any downtime or exploration.

I think apart of what makes Smiling Friends feel even more layered, is that the show itself feels like it's gaslighting you in a way that feels right at home with the artists working on the show.
