My mind playing tricks again 🤦‍♂️

Yes, Homer was very good reading Empireland and Empireworld. Really enjoyed both of them!

This is the book I wish we’d had in school growing up. Do yourself a favour if you haven’t read it.

Empireland demystifies much of our shared history. And puts into context many of the challenges we are grappling with today.

An excellent tool against those seeking to divide us. And only 99p today.

Who'd have thought writing a book was so dangerous?
That some are prepared to kill for it?

Sathnam Sanghera's Empireland offers some very clear & accurate views on exactly how potent those influences were.

- Empireland: How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain - Sathnam Sanghera

A sobering end to the year, wish I could send every Reform voter a copy to temper their rah rah about the Empire. Really looking forward to Sathnam Sanghera's book about George Michael coming next year.

Books on the Avanti West Coast mainline Special Edition:

Empireland by Sathnam Sanghera
A Short History of British Architecture by Simon Jenkins

Quite the double act, that. Don’t think I’ll introduce them to each other.

@sathnam.bsky.social Just been discussing with my geography teacher great-nephew what he wants for Xmas, and we’ve settled on a copy of Empireland and a bag of Monsooned Malabar 👌🏻

You see very similar attitudes in other European countries, and even the U.S. has figured out how to show utter contempt for its "territories" (god forbid one call Puerto Rico a colony). I thought Empireland did a brilliant job of covering the UK story. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/702442...

I'll have to watch this myself. I can thoroughly recommend Sathnam Sanghera's books, Empireland & Empireworld, real eyeopeners for me.

Me too. I read Empireland and Empireworld by @sathnam.bsky.social - also recommended - but seeing some of the places really helped my understanding of our colonial history. Using young people from immigrant backgrounds to relate their experiences was effective, too.

It reminds me of some of the points made in Sathnam Sanghera's Empireland and I think the more the UK population understands how they were and are truly seen from outside, the faster we'll be able to shed many of the comforting yet damaging myths we've woven for ourselves.

This fella and what him and his associates did is mentioned in Empireland by @sathnam.bsky.social
Terrible stuff- but would 100% recommend Empireland.

@davidolusoga.bsky.social "Empire" is certainly worth a watch, as is @sathnam.bsky.social Empireland worth reading.

GB needs to reckon with its old empire. It is after all, why this island is the way it is today.
