Thanks, I already have the Datasaurus in my notes! (Although being delivered by someone else this academic year.)

There some great open source tools that do this with little effort.

In addition to Abscome’s quartet, you can also play with the Datasaurus Dozen.

@datasaurus Yeah, before I follow someone I usually check how often they post per day. I like your idea of making a list for occasionally checking in!

@datasaurus Oh, you make a very excellent point!

Hey Fediverse, I just published a paper! It's been almost a decade since I was the lead author on a peer-reviewed paper -- I've been working on government reports and internal stuff-and-things behind the scenes. It feels really good to […]

This group of 13 datasets is known as the Datasaurus Dozen, and was created by scientists to be used by students learning to work with data.

https://about.dataclassroom.com/ready-to-teach/datasaurus

Students explore a set of datasets through both their summary statistics and through graphing.

Agreed it is important to have the experiment context in there! And fair point that box plots can be confusing to audiences. Any summary will lose information, so showing the data alongside summaries keep them honest. Have you seen the datasaurus dozen? www.research.autodesk.com/publications...

@datasaurus I'm a bit uncomfortable with the advice to start CPR if they may still have a pulse, since as someone else pointed out (indirectly) elsewhere in the thread, if you're doing CPR properly you're likely to break a few ribs, which is an outcome to be avoided if possible. I'm pretty sure […]

I should add the Datasaurus dozen to my slides for my analytics class instead of doing Anscombe (or in addition) as it is easier to relate to
June 6, 2025 at 4:34 PM
Yes. Plot everything. (Do not put all of those plots in your paper/lab report!)

A favourite exercise when I taught stats was to get students to calculate the mean and std deviation of one set each from the 'Datasaurus dozen', and then get them to plot their data! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datasau...

@datasaurus @jonobie Could be the result of “shrinkflation”, where instead of raising prices they put less and less of the product into the container over time.

The "Datasaurus Dozen" is a standard example of how data can tell lots of different stories depending how you look at them. All of the data sets below have identical summary statistics (ones that are commonly reported) yet are clearly very heterogeneous. (from juliasilge.com/blog/datasau...)

Musk would fit a regression through the Datasaurus and jubilantly proclaim there is no relationship between jumping off the roof of a 100 story building and death. IYKYK
