#31DaysOfGraves Day 13 Inside

Upto not long a go some were not permitted to be buried INSIDE the parish cemetery, inside consecrated ground.

Unbaptised babies, non-Catholics, suicides were not allowed inside. Many were buried in Cillíní - small liminal spaces, bits of fields

Cillíni can also be seen as a way of collectively creating a place of remembrance for people who weren’t allowed to be memorialized formally. There were burial rituals around them, they often reused old pilgrimage churches or sacred places that hadn’t become parish churches.

Cillíní are the burial sites in Ireland where unbaptised babies were buried, being denied access to official graveyards. They are a feature of the Irish countryside, from the 7th century up to the 1970s. More info at my site. - www.tommyweir.net/Cillin/

And another thing! I read some article where an anthropologist compared the M&B burials to cillíni, which I think is oversimplifying. Cillíni were burial grounds for people who couldn’t be buried in a consecrated place. The rule about who could be buried with a marker is cruel as hell! But

I knew nothing about cillíní until I saw an episode of Ear to the Ground (a farming program) tonight on RTE.
