On 28 January, in a landmark ruling, the District Court of The Hague found that the Netherlands violated Dutch-Caribbean island of Bonaire residents’ human rights by treating them as second-class citizens and not protecting them from the climate crisis.

This week, the Hague District Court ordered the Netherlands govt. to create a plan to mitigate the effects of climate change for the Caribbean island Bonaire. The Netherlands must also set binding targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Dutch court rules that government should do more to protect the island of Bonaire, in the Caribbean Netherlands, against climate change (sea level rise, loss of coral reefs). Plan needs to kick in by 2030.

Willemstoren Lighthouse, Curacao, built in 1837, is the oldest lighthouse in Bonaire, located in the Caribbean Netherlands. It stands on the southern tip of the island, guiding ships safely through the waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. These are Dutch Caribbean islands located just off the coast of Venezuela. They are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. For years, the ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao have used small boats to trade and transport products, primarily food, from Venezuela.
