The 27th of this January was another International Holocaust Remembrance Day [in memory of the six-million Jewish lives taken by Adolf Hitler and his genocidal Nazis]---the day, in January 1945, that Red-Army forces from the east [fighting the Nazis] liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, where Hitler's Nazis had murdered a million Jewish men, women and children, besides tens of thousands of other ethnicities, including Sinti and Roma (Gypsies), since 1942; and where around seven-thousand prisoners remaining in the camp were now freed on 27 January 1945. By that time the Nazi-SS perpetrators had fled the facility, taking with them up to sixty-thousand-plus prisoners on death marches, of whom a quarter would perish on the way. BUT there had been other camps in occupied Poland---*BELZEC and *SOBIBOR (1942-43) and *TREBLINKA (1942- 44). Also, *MAJDANEK, 1941-44, and *CHELMNO, 1941-43/1944-45 [both liberated by Red-Army forces]---where as many as two-million Jews, apart from countless others [Gypsies, Slavs, political prisoners and Red-Army prisoners-of-war] were murdered. That is, in these five camps combined, besides Auschwitz-Birkenau. Images of only a handful of the leading Nazi war criminals of genocide, perpetrators of the Holocaust; and sample images of multitudes of their supporters in Nazi Germany at the time, giving the Nazi salute of unconditional, blind allegiance to their supreme personality-cult-god leader, Fuehrer, Adolf Hitler. A former auxiliary police guard was put on the site, farming the property to further camouflage it. Soviets liberated the Sobibor killing center in 1944 & in Jul 1944, the area of Belzec was taken over by advancing Soviets. SOURCE: #Holocaust Encyclopedia

Facts: In 1943, SS & Police oversaw exhuming & burning bodies at Balzec before it was dismantled & the Jewish slaves who did the work were murdered. “After the Belzec camp was dismantled, the Germans plowed over the site, built a manor house & planted trees & crops to disguise it as a farm.

Heute ist Holocaust Gedenktag. Es gibt viele Gedenktage für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus. Juden*Jüdinnen sind aber nicht eine Gruppe unter vielen.
Warum an dieses spezifische Verbrechen auch besonders gedacht werden muss, wird in diesem Buch sehr klar.

And last but not least the books by Darius Libionka and Robert Kuwalek that were very helpful when writing the Belzec article. Both are Polish and as a result can access sources those not speaking the language might overlook. So don't just read Western historians, but also try to read local experts.

After Hitler was elected his stormtroopers began grabbing people (Jews, socialists & enemies) off the street and stuck them in basements and other "wild" jails where they were abused & killed. To solve this unregulated terror, the Nazis came up with a solution. They called them concentration camps.

Gas Chambers were only used in "extermination" camps from "Operation Reinhard" & from 1942 onwards (there were about 6 in total Sobibor, Chelmno,Treblinka, Bełżec)

Frankfurter’s response, Karski said, was, “I do not believe you.” When the Polish ambassador, who was present at the meeting, vouched for Karski’s irreproachable honesty, Frankfurter responded, “I did not say that he is lying; I said that I don’t believe him.”

January 1942|Christian Wirth brought the first Trawnikimänner to the German Nazi death camp SS-Sonderkommando #Belzec. At first they were tasked with digging mass graves and masking the camp during its construction. Later they worked as sentry guards and escorted the victims into the gas chambers.

The Wannsee Conference lasted only about ninety minutes. Heydrich did not call the meeting to make fundamental new decisions on the Jewish question; mass-murder of Jews in the conquered territories in the Soviet Union and Poland were ongoing. #Auschwitz was already in operation and a new extermination camp was under construction at #Belzec, and other extermination camps were in the planning stages. Legalized discrimination against Jews in Germany began immediately after the Nazi seizure of power in January 1933. The ideology of Nazism brought together elements of antisemitism, racial hygiene, and eugenics and combined them with pan-Germanism and territorial expansionism with the goal of obtaining more Lebensraum (living space) for the Germanic people. Hitler had previously decided that all European Jews should be killed. By early 1942, the Nazis had already murdered more than one million Jews. In the meeting on 20 January 1942, the Nazis organized the murder of the remaining Jews. They were deported to concentration and extermination camps. The murder of millions of people was treated like a bureaucratic task. The focus was on numbers, logistics, and administrative responsibilities. It reminded me a lot of this fragment in the book by Robert Kuwalek on Belzec. I was stunned when I read this working on the article for Traces of War. Women were very much used in a gendered way to make the operations of the camp more efficient. 2/2

Violinist, clarinetist, theatre conductor and teacher Adolf Gimpel was born in Lvov #OTD in 1875. He was the conductor of the Lviv Jewish orchestra for over 30 years. He was murdered in the Bełżec extermination camp.
