2/3. I love an archaeology-adjacent film and had forgotten that a key scene and the titles were filmed at the palaeolithic Cougnac caves in southern France. The paintings are c25,000 years old. Their potency resonates throughout the film in various ways, but without Chabrol ever underlining them.

This mysterious object from Kent is a bifacially worked axehead or handaxe. It resembles a #Mesolithic transverse or tranchet axehead, however given it's heavily worn condition and the gravel from which it was recovered it may be a #Palaeolithic handaxe of an unusually elongate form.

Together with Krist Vaesen, I have written some words of caution about #replication in lithic analysis. We fear that the way the issue has been taken up in #Palaeolithic #archaeology can narrow the scope of disciplinary inquiry 🏺🧪🦣

Palaeolithic populations had the right idea - use stone.

I asked Oxford/Cotswold Archaeology about the dating of the lithic. Their specialist said was based on 'typological character' only. It's a ‘Bout Coupé handaxe' seen 60–40,000 years ago. Best investigated site with these handaxes is Lynford.
