have you seen Aftersun? small subtle film that will stay with you long after. I also loved The World to Come (directed by the woman who cowrote brutalist &directed Ann Lee). Guilty pleasure series that more people should watch: Halt & Catch Fire and Transplant (gem of a Hospital series/Toronto)

Thoughts on Is This Thing On?:

Peyton Manning discussing how great it is to transition from playing to coaching is funny as fuck

They said the word grace 10000 times

I'm sorry but Under Pressure makes me think of Aftersun now so I didn't care for its usage here

I just discovered how much older I am than Paul Mescal and I don’t know if I like him anymore. He was way too young to make Aftersun, dude was 14 when the daughter actress was born, they lied to me, I am not owned, I am not owned, I am not transforming into a corncob. I am corncob. Corncob.

Dr Sanil Rege - Why Aftersun Hurts More After It Ends
Why Aftersun Hurts More After It Ends
This video explores why the film Aftersun affects people so deeply by examining memory, grief, attachment, and the unconscious emotional world between a father and daughter. In this reflective analysis, psychiatrist Dr Sanil Rege explores Aftersun, the debut film by Charlotte Wells, and why it resonates so powerfully with audiences long after the credits roll. Rather than offering a traditional film review, this video unpacks Aftersun as a psychological and emotional experience — one rooted in fragmented memory, unspoken loss, and the quiet devastation of trying to understand someone only after they’re gone. Drawing on psychodynamic concepts such as retrospective mentalization, unformulated experience, and attachment rupture, Dr Rege explores how the film mirrors the way real memory works — not as a clear narrative, but as emotionally weighted fragments that return later in life. The analysis also examines the iconic use of Under Pressure as a moment of emotional rupture, where what was once unprocessed finally floods into awareness. This video is for: Clinicians interested in memory, attachment, and emotional development Viewers who felt deeply affected by Aftersun but couldn’t explain why Anyone reflecting on childhood, loss, or emotionally unavailable parents ⏱️ Chapter Breakdown 00:00 – Why Aftersun Hurts So Much Why this film stays with you long after it ends 02:10 – This Is Not a Review Aftersun as reflection, memory, and emotional reconstruction 03:50 – Memory Is Fragmented Why there are no neat story arcs — and why that matters 04:08 – Retrospective Mentalization Trying to understand someone only after they’re gone 06:22 – The Rave & “Under Pressure” The return of the repressed 07:49 – Attachment Rupture Presence mixed with absence 08:28 – Emotional Imprints What children carry into adulthood 9:02 – A Personal Reflection Fatherhood, meaning, and what we leave behind Dr Sanil Rege is a Consultant Psychiatrist (MBBS, MRCPsych, FRANZCP) and medical educator. Paul Mescal is by far one of my favourite actors though. I loved All of Us Strangers and Aftersun + Normal People but Hamnet does not look great.
January 10, 2026 at 3:25 PM
I really disliked the last act, both the acting and the emotionally heavy use of music. That aside, we’re pretty much in agreement on this one. Give me Paul Mescal in AFTERSUN any day, but this was just awful.
