#YYC’s
And like clockwork…

Dan Williams and the UCP have inserted themselves into #YYC’s pipeline problems.

We're now three weeks since #yyc's first big snowfall and trying to push a stroller around this city is still a pain. This is a well-used route next to a shopping centre (North Hill Centre). #yycwalk #yyccc

A nice day to ski at YYC's Confederation Park earlier today with great grooming by Foothills Nordic; and paid online for our family pass for the season - $75, such a deal!

It's midnight so officially it's Dec 25 (aka Christmas Day) in my province of #Alberta. Here's hoping everyone is having a very happy & safe time. When I first posted this photo (my personal favourite I took in 2023) I only had 8 followers so for most of you it's new. #MerryChristmas #photography 😊

Got tickets to YYC's Dungeon Fest next week, found out there's an open format kitbash/painting competition, and got VERY inspired to finally make the BubbleGum Crisis diorama I've been working skills up for, for years. Expect lots of progress posts this week. #diorama #miniatures

I've been working in MH&A and with some of #yyc's most vulnerable for 30 years and I'm always in awe of the DI staff. Give her a big thanks.

This would have been nice during #yyc’s water shortage last summer when I was taking those army and navy showers and saving the water to flush toilets 🥲. I did consider it good practice for the times to come, though
"A French startup has created a shower that uses just 5 liters of water—no matter how long it runs. Its real-time recycling system promises comfort without waste, even during droughts."

Used water is collected, pumped, filtered, disinfected, and reheated... all inside the column of the shower.

Here's an autumn photo I took of the Bow River, which winds through Calgary. The clusters of trees with their fall foliage frame yyc's downtown nicely. The paddleboarding couple travelling downstream made this one of my favourite recent photos.

“ One key factor is #yyc's urban sprawl & low density growth.” But the pipe was completed 1972 when urban sprawl and low density growth were well known, especially in the urban planning community.

I remember the fun we had talking about Calgarians called for controlling population growth by City.

⚾️ NEW STORY: “You get a little more aggressive and punch first before you get punched." It's a change in approach that has #YYC's Michael Soroka betting on himself after signing a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals. #ABproud #Alberta #Baseball 🇨🇦
A Wager in Washington
Calgary's Michael Soroka is betting on himself as he has signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals, where he hopes to get back into a starter's role.

I admire much of YYC's writing. However:
"In the West, the actual demands of the movement were less important than the spectacle of bloodshed [...] What’s packaged as journalism is really entertainment for the satisfaction of a self-congratulatory audience", requires at least one raised eyebrow.

A tandem tricycle! Love this. Would love to see a few of these available for yyc’s pathways.

I'll be at YYC's, will you?

In related news: maybe it's because I've recently rewatched the Lord of the Rings trilogy but it occurred given yyc's deep industry ties to the US and our provincial gov's inclinations, this city is right well positioned to become Isengard....jfc I need to go for a walk and touch some grass 😂
oof -- truly never thought I'd have cause to be curious about what might happen to my tfsa and how to access my money if my country is invaded... legit thinking about it. fucking weird.

YYC's council is reviewing the budget this month, it is important to maintain adequate $ for active mobility. On that topic, here is a new video on how cycling infrastructure is planned to make most efficient use of $ in Montreal - this also applies to YYC: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe5M... #yycbike

I shot this in late fall, when #Calgary was not yet cold. 2 #mallard drakes, lazily floating in a brook flowing through #yyc's Confederation Park. They were still enough that the reflection of the trees on the opposite bank gave this a nice look.

I have long argued (& anyone who has taken my undergrad climate change course can confirm) that municipalities can have an outsized impact on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

It's a big part of why I'm running in YYC's next election.

I love when people ask about climate at the doors!
🧵 It's said that a politician only has 2 jobs:

1) Get elected
2) Get reelected

They need your vote like you & I need oxygen. That's our POWER & nowhere are we stronger than at the municipal or city level. It just so happens that at the city level is also where #ClimateAction is most viable. #yyc

When the awful Renewables Moratorium got dropped on Alberta's nation-leading industry that was supposed to start filling up #YYC's downtown again many of Calgary's institutions didn't say a word. Not the Hub. We pushed back. You can help us.

#OTD in 1920: Explosion & fire kills 2 at the month-old Canadian Liquid Air plant, now site of Harry Hays Building in #yyc's Chinatown. The firm—a branch of French-based Air Liquide—rebuilds, makes industrial gases & oxygen for medical needs. Explodes & burns again, 1950; moves to SE Calgary, 1970.

🌈Happy pride parade, everyone.🏳️‍🌈
2SLGBTQIA+ folks are significantly overrepresented in #yyc's unhoused population. Our celebration must include action. Let's build a Calgary where everyone, regardless of who they are, has a safe place to call home. #yycpride #yyccc

Faith in humanity re-affirmed outside of #YYC's #CentralPublicLibrary as I joined like 7 total strangers pushing a car through the mushy impromptu skating rink out front ("YOU GOTTA ROCK IT FELLAS" I bellowed at one point). Triumph, cheers & the slapping of backs & we all went on our ways. Grace.
