Ping @simon-brooke.mastodon.scot.ap.brid.gy as promised, a photo of a quite large and rather purple SGI workstation 😁

A purple Silicon Graphics workstation cube that's a *lot* bigger than I thought it would be.

Most of Hollywood's '90s CGI special effects were created on SGI machines like this...

Fedora Workstation is the goat though.

Like, legitimately good.

Welp! I just made a few online purchases and by December I’ll be running 100Gb/s at home lol

(Point to point between my workstation and my nas for now. I dropped a *lot* on a special cable that’ll run 50m to my bedroom, but I don’t see needing a switch anytime soon)

Eu uso um notebook workstation que minha empresa comprou que fico até com medo. Meu carro não vale o mesmo que ele

NB: Some of this isn't necessarily Ubuntu vs Fedora but rather GNOME desktop environment vs KDE. Fedora Workstation also uses GNOME, but I've heard Fedora GNOME is also nicer than Ubuntu GNOME but in different ways

But some of this does specifically relate to the underlying Fedora vs Ubuntu OS

I could also open up a digital audio workstation and slack off even further.

I need to acquire a SGI workstation to play with. It's the only computer from the 90s I haven't had a chance to mess around with.

@ajsadauskas It's worth looking up some of the contemporary Silicon Graphics/SGI box designs. They were really nice.

Can anyone share their experiences with xp-pen and Mac (iMac/macbook pro)?
I’m toying with the idea of maybe getting the 16 pro ultra. I have an M4 iMac as my main workstation.
I had a cintiq 16 (wacom). And it was an absolute piece of crap -not even color accurate).
Would appreciate a RT 🙏

had a VERY good time and I'm excited to be back home and in my own bed again and also with my cats and my workstation... but I'm gonna miss actually getting to hang out irl with my partner 😞

I think you'll still be shocked. It is very much being marketed as a console-like experience as it's for entertainment and not a workstation, but I expect the price will be far more expensive than something much more powerful that you could just build yourself. But it's Valve so of course OMG!!

I think my biggest motivator right now to get at least one of my old PCs set up as a linux-ready workstation is that it may genuinely be easier to get my kinects in a stable working state on that than it is on a Microsoft OS right now.

Yeah, I definitely want one but I feel like I'll need to do a calculation of convenience Vs properly setting up streaming my workstation PC to my main TV, and see how much I'm willing to pay for convenience

I've found the Steam Deck to be pretty smooth. I almost never bother with "desktop" mode (given that I have a daily driver Linux laptop and workstation I'm happy using the 'Deck as purely a portable gaming PC with Steam) and think the basic Steam-on-Steam-Deck experience is competitive with Switch.
