This was a GREAT book! It was fun, interesting and it has SO much info; even the origins of common idioms. It was well researched, funny, and an enjoyable read. I definitely suggest you get a copy! So if I ever time travel to medieval England,I’m taking Toni Mount with me! #whatshistory🗃️ #medievalsky

I remain consistently baffled how few students have read Kipling's "The White Man's Burden" in high school, and how profoundly they struggle to analyze poetry in general, esp. poetry like Kipling's that has a clear political message to it. 🗃️

2,500-year old city network under forest in Ecuador - 1,000 years older than next oldest Amazonian cities unearthed so far.

I heard about LIDAR from the late great Neil L. Whitehead in 2010. Every new discovery reminds me of him. #WhatsHistory #Archeology 🗃️ shorturl.at/lnACN

Loving this article about Jacquetta of Luxembourg by Lucia Diaz Pascual. Brilliant work that shows Jacquetta’s influence despite lack of contemporary source material. #whatshistory 🗃️

An attempted coup was foiled in 1934 thanks to #SmedleyButler 🗃️. Will we be so lucky in 2025 when it seems evident there is another #coup happening?

In 1934, American #democracy nearly fell to a #coup.
It was organized by oligarchs of the day to seize power from president FDR.

The plotters tried to hire Major General Smedley Butler to get the military on their side.

He blew the whistle & stopped the coup

As part of my fact finding mission for Chapter 3 of the new book, I headed to the Foundling Hospital museum in West London, built in the 1930s a stone's throw from the site of the original hospital itself which was opened in 1741.

It's one thing to look at just the Census returns, but it's another to look at the hand-written notations by the people gathering the info., to see how they reinforce the racial division between not just slave and free, but black and white, in their notations. This is from NC, Census of 1810

Hey, are any historians out there doing work on slavery, the Constitution, political representation, and/or the early Census? If so, please reply! I'm looking to get a panel together for next year's #SHEAR conference

In town for a day or two. This view never gets old for me. A #castle which has held out for nearly a year at a time (1640 by Patrick Ruthven), but also been taken in under an hour (1639 by a certain Alexander Leslie).

HELLO HISTORY HIVEMIND:
I am looking for some NYC-based academic historians (any geographic area, any period) for something really exciting. They just have to be someone engaging to talk/listen to.
Would love some suggestions!

Happy Boxing Day to those who pugilate!

The number one movie at the domestic box office for the week of December 20–26, 1985, was Rocky IV. 🥊🎬🍿🎄

“Pugilate” is a word that hasn’t been used since the 1850s. 🗃️ #WhatsHistory
