Some of my best vivariums
February 11, 2026 at 8:01 PM
That is so awesome. I've always wanted a sun room like that, filled with plants and cool reptile and amphibian vivariums. Instead, I have two tanks in two rooms and a couple small greenhouses in my basement. 🤣

Showing off some of the enclosures in my animal room. I just laser cut some new signs and redid the lighting.

YouTube started serving me videos of people building vivariums and stuff like that...and man...this content is just so very chill and calming and you get to watch shrimp and fish and stuff. A+++++ would recommend. www.youtube.com/@SerpaDesign

And they inspire people to either integrate them or make them center pieces in plant vivariums.

Sick on the couch watching AntsCanada (YouTube). The guy has built gigantic vivariums. They’re better than some zoos.

Decided it's spring enough outside (shuddap snow!) to tidy up the indoor plants!
Many of these were in poor light areas, but some live in well-maintained vivariums... can you guess which?

The foursome live on my fridge now, much better lighting hahaha

Reptile + aquarium room. Just an enormous, climate-controlled room filled top to bottom with rows and rows of huge vivariums and aquariums. Featuring like 6x4x4' enclosures for my rainbow boa, rat snakes, and corn snakes, 200+ gallon freshwater aquariums, and a full rack of little shrimp tanks, etc.
if you could have one absolutely ridiculous thing in your house, money is no issue, what would you add?

The tricky part of course is getting decent enough at drilling glass not to crack or chip stuff. But with some practice that may be do-able. I may not be able to build vivariums from scratch but I might be able to handle drilling a hole.

There are companies that sell glass vivariums with cross ventilation but they are not appropriate either, open from the sides, don't allow for me to pile substrate on the bottom

Glass aquariums are not ideal due to the lack of cross ventilation.
And plastic vivariums sold for like, tarantulas or frogs or whatever are not the right dimensions either. Not to mention ventilation I'd need to cover with fine mesh.

I've been watching a lot of videos by SerpaDesign lately. The guy marries his two hobbies, building stuff and keeping pets. Of course, I could never hope to custom-build the kinds of vivariums he makes. I'm not a very "handy" sort of gal. But it still got me to thinking . . .

Yes, as I've learnt through experience you can provide cover in pens. In vivariums, the poor animals are devoid of natural oxygen.

No reptiles shouldn't be kept as pets, especially not in colder countries like Britain. If you live in warmer climes like Spain, Malta etc, and you like reptiles. Then keep them outside in a very large secure pen, with a covering overnight. Not to be kept in vivariums

got so into vivariums that now when we turn the lights off at night we declare it "bug bedtime"

Years ago (2013, I think) I saw an exhibit about teeny poison dart frogs in the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. They had vivariums with lots of the little beauties. Just enchanting.

if you want something bugs and ecology related, check out Ants Canada! AC owns many giant vivariums and makes some really fun dramatizations of what happens inside, and gets some amazing recordings. MASSIVE bug and spider and animal death warnings, naturally www.youtube.com/@AntsCanada

This includes making aquascapes, terrariums, vivariums, and all other planty, fishy, nature-y crafts!
Also, congratulations everyone who made something this year. A comic, a song, a film, a novel, a painting, a poem, a short story, a sculpture, crochet, embroidery, whatever it is. In this era of slop and theft, if you *make* something you are a shining jewel and I am so grateful for you.
