The story I have painted is the near-universal story of the Cold War and the War on Terror story.

Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan etc.

Same logic here with Ukraine. Backed by an unreliable Western ally with a weak pain threshold.

So will inevitably be forced into a bad position.

Trump shook down Vietnam and got a Trump Resort Vietnam

So the obvious outcome, like in Vietnam, is that the distant Western democracy America - suffering pain - pulls out. Russian pain threshold is far higher, so they just dig in to what they have gained.

Ukraine is left in the lurch like South Vietnam, and has to sue for peace.

Most large companies won't, but many of the smaller ones will. The variety of entities in Vietnam selling clothes comes to mind; quite a few stopped shipping to US entirely because it wasn't cost-effective, but that potentially changes back now

I’ll be surprised if most big companies lower their prices instead of pocketing the difference

The French were right about Vietnam, Democratic socialism, national health, keeping food, air & water safe, reducing their carbon footprint, tying mass transit & housing construction to the economy, putting their citizens first & didn't they warn Dubya that creating regional Mideast war was bad?

Vietnam is the one that doesn't make sense to me. They have a good relationship with China.

I attended the first Anti-Vietnam War Moratorium in 1969, but learned that, only when "Business" began thinking that continuing the War might be very "bad for Business", turned against the War, and even William F. Buckley opposed the Draft as "involuntary servitude", did we "wind down the war".

As in the Vietnam scenario, all the authoritarian state has to do is dig in and wage long-term attritional war.

In the end, South Vietnam/Ukraine is ground down. Rump NATO is then forced - without America - to either put boots on the ground or Ukraine has to sue for peace on Russian terms.

That authoritarian state, as in the Vietnam scenario, will never give up and can tolerate far more pain and losses for a far longer period than Western democratic societies can - especially a distant and disinterested America.

America will throw Ukraine aside to pursue core interests, as with S.V.

I don't say any of this to belittle Ukraine, and it is obvious that Russia's invasion was morally evil.

I just think it is obvious that the fundamentals of the war involve something like a South Vietnam scenario. Ukraine is South Vietnam, up against a more committed authoritarian state.

Asymmetric warfare is extraordinarily difficult for a military power to prevent or defeat. Just look at Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

I wish so much that this were true.

What changed things w civil rights in US was the FDR/Truman SCOTUS & LBJ's forcefulness. Vis labor rights it was threats to the flows of capital & the threat of a labor revolution. Vietnam was true media coverage of the war's human toll & fact that US was losing

@theguardian.com It's super easy to make typos on a live blog. But it is Lesotho, not "Lesotha". Please do better than Donald, at least respect the country.
