yeah trenchbroom is something that should've existed in the 90s but the windows APIs/libraries/toolkits weren't quite there yet

QuArK tried to do an interactive 3d view, but it was so slow and unstable (being a Delphi+Python1 mix), the visualbasic iteration of UnrealEd was more usable than that

Funnily enough, I was just the other day thinking about how many useful things could be done by integrating AI with UnrealEd. But that was in terms of helping newbies work out how to do things and also helping them debug errors in their content setups as well as code.
