#Trajan
There is another factual error in chapter 2, but a minor one.

Ehrman claims that Pliny the Younger wrote to emperor Trajan that Early Christians sang hymns to Christ as to a god.

Actually, Pliny the Younger wrote that Early Christians song *a hymn* (one), not plural.

Pliny The Younger & his cousin Emperor Trajan wrote letters to each other about what to do about Christians & did so as a means to advertise the religion that Pliny helped to create. As the NT Paul, Pliny wrote of places of vice to advertise those as well. #Discover

Timgad in snow. This Roman city was in the Aurès Mountains of Algeria. It was founded by the Emperor Trajan around 100 AD. The full name of the city was Colonia Marciana Ulpia Traiana Thamugadi. Emperor Trajan named the city in commemoration of his family. Photo: Tarek Bencassi. #RomanSiteSaturday

It then immediately says he was a ward of Trajan and Caelius Attianus.

This is also wrong. The man's name was Acilius Attianus.

The whole thing is full of this nonsense. It's magnificently silly. Writing the endnotes for my translation of it will take months!

Milestone from Beek near #Nijmegen, one of the northernmost on the European mainland.

The preserved section bears the name and honorary titles of Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD), during whose reign the milestone must have been placed along the road from Nijmegen to Xanten.

This is a Roman denarius of Trajan dating to the period c. AD 114-117. Trajan was responsible for the building of 'Trajan's Market' in Rome. It housed administrative offices, shops and apartments built in a multi-level structure. #FindsFriday finds.org.uk/database/art...

And I haven't done research on this, but... is it possible that Pliny knew the restrictions on Egyptians becoming citizens, deliberately withheld that information from Trajan, and is now asking for forgiveness rather than permission? Might that even be how we're meant to read the situation?

It's like how Trajan is remembered because maps of the Roman Empire will note the borders represent "maximum extent under Trajan". Except that means the territory Trajan added couldn't be held, and probably shouldn't have been taken in the first place. It was all downhill from there.
