#Sovietistán
Currently reading Erika Fatland's Sovietistan and the way she describes how many of the central Asian former SSRs work is pretty much a possible blueprint for what's happening here. The narcissistic felon would be right at home in Turkmenistan.

I have both Sovietistan and The Border on my list after reading High. She hits just the right note, doesn't she.

I really enjoyed Fatland’s Sovietistan earlier in the year and like you thought it would take me ages to read but it was so compelling (and well written/well translated) that I raced through it. Will add this one to my extensive TBR and possibly will bump it towards the top!

I’m reading details about the first two presidents of Turkmenistan (in a fascinating book titled Sovietistan), and my heart sinks with each new revelation. The golden statues of the first president. His cancellations of most of the old-age pensions in the country. Renaming months of the year.

No-one needs russia. In fact, the world will be a much better place once russia is defeated and dissolved into smaller "normal" states. I think this fact is dawning on many "Sovietistan" republics now.

My project to read the world is introducing me to some incredible writing mostly via exploring the shelves at @dauntbooks.bsky.social - travel guides, non fiction & fiction from around the world categorised by country not genre.
This week’s gems have been about Morocco & former Soviet republics 💙📚

Last time In sovietistan (now Russia famine was artificially created, to push starving people into armies (there they got food and deah).
Expect this to happen now. They need "FREELY SIGNED UP SOLDIERS". And thats what they did last time and do now. Forcing people to army without great mobilisation!
