#Sorrowland
Unsolicited book rec for y'all:
Sorrowland, by Rivers Solomon.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I walked into this book expecting something COMPLETELY different and this was so much better than anything I could have ever imagined.
I wanted to scream and cry and shout and throw it down. It was too real.

Going to reread Sorrowland by Rivera Solomon. It is a trippy body-horror story in which the main character, Ven, challenges their own upbringing as well as spiritually bankrupt mainstream US life and creates their own space in this world, with a little help. Ven has low vision, and powers maybe?

When I travel I do always like seeing what other booksellers have enjoyed.

Waterstones Cambridge has On Sundays She Picked Flowers by Yah Yah Scholfield on their display, which sounds like intriguing and unsettling woodland horror.

Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon.
4.5 stars

This read is wild. I had no idea where it was going, but I was ready to follow Vern wherever she went.

A captivating horror that embraces female and black rage. If you enjoy Parable of the Sower and/or Mexican Gothic, give this book a try.

I read and loved Unsex Me Here last year, so I know I really enjoy Aurora Mattia's writing style, which is why The Fifth Wound is on my tbr again. I was also recommended it by a friend and I love the cover.
Sorrowland and Model Home are both here because I enjoy Rivers Solomon's other works.

A few are left over from last year's tbr (Sorrowland, The Fifth Wound, Margins and Murmurations, Lote). Others are recommendations from friends (Chouette, Exile and Pride, The Traitor Baru Cormorant + more tbh). A few are from my library holds.

Sorrowland was haunting and intense. I have been reading books by nonbinary and trans authors lately and I really like the themes and the visceral ways in which otherness is portrayed and embodied.

(1/5) “Sorrowland” by Rivers Solomon.

A religious cult escapee raises her babies in the woods while being chased by a monster, but she’s also changing.

153 books, a year shaped by wonder, comfort, rage, curiosity, & joy. From small fierce stories to sprawling worlds, from dragons to space ships, and cosy to bloody, this reading year felt generous, strange, and satisfying.
