everyone talking about The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald has put me in mind of the other great Canadian song about a shipwreck, Stan Rogers' The Mary Ellen Carter (this one's a fictitious shipwreck). If you've never heard it before, treat yourself: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJQk...

I'm developing from this an entire new theory of sports based on whether the ball/puck/etc. is good or bad. Football, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, rugby: ball good. Baseball, tennis, volleyball, handball, cricket: ball bad. In basketball the ball is desirable yet also toxic so don't touch it for long

I think we should bring back vibe spelling. Just add extra letters wherever, as you feel ‘em. Things can be frantick or hectick if you need that superfluous ’k’ edge. Resist the tyranny of received orthography!

Rosalind Franklin died at 37 of ovarian cancer attributed to radiation exposure from the methods she & her assistant used to photograph a cross-section of the DNA double helix.

Meanwhile, Watson won a Nobel off that work & survived to the ripe old age of 97 by simply: stealing those notes!

Cornell agreed to pay $30m, hand over admissions data with demographic breakdowns, produce annual "campus climate" surveys to check on antisemitism and changes "since October of 2023," and—here's the dumbest part they agreed to—that the govt can open new investigations whenever it wants.

Appeasers.

this op-ed from Brad Lander is fire but also I laughed out loud at the "I have friends everywhere" reference. what a nerd. I hope Tony Gilroy is proud that his art has become part of a national lexicon of resistance and community

just saw del Toro's Frankenstein and it was AMAZING. absolutely my favourite del Toro film. Understood the fucking assignment. The casting, the frame narrative, costumes, set design, choosing when to be faithful to the book and when to bring in some Universal Classic Monsters vibes . . . mwah

this is what's truly inspiring about the Mamdani campaign. They're organizers; they understand that you build power by energizing and motivating people to DO THINGS. The election was an opportunity to build power, not to access it, and it's only one step on the path. I'm so fucking jazzed about this
After Zohran's historic victory in New York City, we’re gearing up for an ambitious new phase of worker organizing across all five boroughs.

We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build the labor movement in New York and beyond. You can help. 🔗👇

Once you start thinking of AI as a war on humanity, on human thought, on human inquiry, on human labor, on nuance and critical thinking, it slots in pretty seamlessly with the right wing ideological project, oligarchical political projects, big tech's political projects, etc

If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

here is my story about how Zohran's focus on community amid the loneliness epidemic helped young people connect their politics to an organizing infrastructure, that interviewed ZM, and does not use the NYT's framing of "they don't know how to make friends" :-) and also ran 4 days before NYT's lol
Zohran Mamdani's Establishment-Fighting Campaign Built Community for Young People
“What Mamdani has done is not only inspire and mobilize young people, but he has exposed the establishment and some of their calcified views of participation and inclusion.”
