He suggest this is the sort of thing that would happen in Putin's Russia. Lammy says justice is not being served now. And he says he would not view the courts in this country as being anything like Russia.

As I’ve said before, it’s crucial that this is a fully democratic process - not a leadership stitch-up. There must also be proper time given in this process so there is a full debate about how the Deputy Leader can help turn things around. But as we approach that election, what is the key role of a Deputy Leader? I believe the first responsibility of the Deputy Leader is to be a strong voice for ordinary, often undervalued, Labour members and their concerns. And it is to be the principal defender of party democracy to ensure that Labour members and affiliates are genuinely listened to. As a figure elected in their own right with a distinct mandate, the Deputy Leader must represent the views of ordinary members, Councillors and affiliates to the Labour Leader - not be there just to relay the leadership’s views back to the membership. This is essential if Labour is to recover from a disastrous first year in government - a year marked by the deliberate sidelining of members’ views. Poll after poll shows Labour members are often more in tune with the public than Ministers are. Listening to members could have helped avoid the policy messes around winter fuel, disability support and Gaza - issues that have alienated both Labour members and voters. It could have helped Labour understand that the public wants taxes on the ultra-wealthy, not more cuts. To ensure members’ voices are properly heard, we need a more vibrant democratic culture in the party - one that allows members to have their say. (And one where MPs are not suspended from the PLP simply for voting with their conscience as has happened far too often, including to myself.) @RichardBurgon X We're at a dangerous moment in our country - where refugees are being blamed for all society's problems. While the super-rich, who really caused these problems, are busy taking more and more wealth from working class people. For 40 years, the ideas launched by Thatcher - cuts, deregulation and privatisation - have meant attack after attack on working-class living standards. The last decade and a half of austerity made things even worse. Instead of holding the billionaire class to account - those who have stolen the wealth created by ordinary people - Farage and his allies are scapegoating refugees and are being cheered on by our billionaire-owned media. But hatred and division won't build a single council house. It won't put a penny more into the NHS. It won't deliver higher wages. In fact, Farage and his mates recently voted against stronger workers' rights in Parliament. They want the NHS replaced with a private system. The only thing this politics of distraction, hatred and division achieves is to protect our rigged economic system - so that the super-rich can keep getting richer, while everyone else is left worse off. Let's be clear: the cause of the problems in our society is the tiny elite hoarding the vast majority of our country's wealth. Refugees fleeing war and persecution are not to blame for collapsing living standards, falling wages, or bringing our NHS to its knees. So instead of this 'divide and rule', let's unite and build a country that really serves the 99% - not the super-rich. Let's impose a wealth tax on the ultra- rich, let's build huge numbers of council houses, let's bring water and energy back into public ownership and let's kick the profiteers out of our NHS. That's how we can build a better future for ordinary people.

Last week, I presented our 77,000 strong petition for a wealth tax, not disability cuts, to Parliament ahead of the vote on the disability support cuts.

The plan is now to get a slot from 10 Downing Street to deliver this petition to the PM ahead of the summer break.
