I walk in the French Alps and Prealps, at medium altitude. It isn't uncommon for me to get comments on how much gear I'm carrying. Mate, you would, too, if you'd learnt your mountain ropes in Britain, where the weather is *capricious*.

Spent last weekend with a hike in the Bavarian preAlps. My kids are finally in the age where they manage to hike up substantial bits - here roughly 400m elevation and 7 km round trip. I've had to lug them around in their backpacks for longer than my back found enjoyable, but times are changing!
