This whole topic became crystal clear to me when it was pointed out during the reconstruction discussions that the elevated freeway that collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake had been constructed cutting right through a Black neighborhood.

Felt that 6.5 earthquake big-time in Mexico City on the 6th floor of our newish hotel in Roma Norte. Much more rolling than when I was in Davis for the Loma Prieta. 🫨 hope everyone is ok.

Beautiful geomorphology crossing the US-Mexico border like it's not even there. Westernmost part of the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge in SW Arizona, Sonora in the southern part of the image, can't find the name of the wash. Sentinel 2 image.

I was four but I remember.
And then after the earthquake my baby sitter’s house burned down because the chimney flue was cracked in her attic during the earthquake.

A scratched up slide of my sister and our late brother, on the Cabeza Prieta Game Range in Arizona, where we spent one Christmas in the early 1970s (it was off-limits for military training most of the time, but you could get a permit on holidays). We hung decorations on a cactus, very carefully.

(I believe Muni streetcars had (or has?) a separate power grid before for similar ends, though overhead wires are still more likely to snap.)

Interesting… and — have you ever been on the BB when an earthquake struck? I lived in L.A. during the Loma Prieta & I can still see the video in my mind of the BB buckling in ‘89
I do not like them in real time. But as a California native I’ve grown up with them.

The worst I ever felt was a 5.3 and that left me feeling stressed out for hours. I can’t imagine how much worse Loma Prieta was.
