Private William Roe's family headstone which is at Slack Lane #graveyard in #Oakworth. There's an inscription to him, but of course he's not buried here, he's in France.

The carved inscription reads as follows: In Loving Remembrance of Sally, Wife of Leonard Roe of Providence, Who Died October 9th 1885, In Her 33rd Year. Also of Fanny, Daughter of The Above Leonard & Grace Roe Who Died Jan. 14th 1899 Aged 7 Weeks. Also of Lance Cpl William Roe Who Was Killed In Action in France Jan. 17th 1917 in His 20th Year. Ever Remembered. Also of Harry, Son of Thomas & Elsie Roe Who Died May 24th 1918, Aged 3 Months. Also of Grace Wife of Leonard Roe, Who Died Sept. 21st 1921 Aged 62 Years. Also of the Above Leonard Roe Who Died Nov. 28th 1927, Aged 73 Years. The Roe family grave at Slack Lane Baptist Church graveyard bears the following inscription to William Roe: Also of Lance Cpl William Roe Who Was Killed In Action in France Jan. 17th 1917, in His 20th Year. Ever Remembered. A newspaper photo of the head and shoulders of a British Army soldier from the Great War period. He's wearing an Army uniform and cap and the cap badge is that of the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment. The photo caption reads: Private Roe, of Oakworth - killed.

HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse were sunk on this day in 1941. One man who survived was P. O. Robert Silcock of #Oakworth, who was later killed in the fall of #Singapore. Yesterday we launched our #Oakworth #Remembrance #Trail. We installed 96 boards on lamp-posts around our village, next to, or close to the homes of the Oakworth men who died in the first and second world wars. A QR Code guides visitors to their biographies on our website:

Seven out of the eight adult volunteers who came out to install the 96 Oakworth Remembrance Trail Boards on Thursday 30th October 2025. Each volunteer is holding a white A3 sized correx board printed with details of a serviceman who died in either the First or the Second World Wars, which will go on to lamp-posts near their homes from before they enlisted. Behind this group is a large laurel hedge and a drystone wall. A man is standing in front of a stage in a village hall and he is holding a clipboard. He is talking to a large group of people seated on several rows of chairs, many of whom are Army Cadets and Sea Cadets in uniform. Nobody has fallen asleep, yet...

So probably not a great day to restart my Stride for Gaza raising money for MAP following illness as I got soaked. BUT I did do a 10km walk so really pleased with that. I walked from Haworth, to Stanbury, Pondon Mill & Reservoir up to Scar Top through Oldfield and up to Oakworth & home #Stride4Gaza
