The inside story of SpaceX’s historic rocket landing that changed launch forever
On Dec. 21, 2015, SpaceX launched the Orbcomm-2 mission on an upgraded version of its Falcon 9 rocket. That night, just days before Christmas, the company successfully landed the first stage for the first time. The story behind this remarkable achievement is nowhere more fully told than in the book Reentry, authored by Ars Technica Senior Space Editor Eric Berger and published in 2024. To mark the tenth anniversary, Ars is reprinting a slightly condensed chapter from the book that tells the inside story of this landing. The chapter begins in June 2015 with a tragedy, the disintegration of a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the CRS-7 cargo supply mission for NASA. It was the first time a Falcon 9 had been lost in flight. Seconds after the Dragon-bearing Falcon 9 rocket broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean, David Giger shouted into his headset, “Dragon is alive!” In the decade since he joined the company straight out of graduate school, Giger had taken on management of the entire Dragon program, reporting directly to Elon Musk. He watched the CRS-7 launch from mission control in Hawthorne not with a particular role, but rather providing a leadership presence. Giger could sense the Dragon mission team, mostly younger engineers, freeze up as video showed debris from the rocket showering back to Earth. A lot of the people involved in the hairy early flights of Dragon, including the C2 mission in 2012, had moved on to other positions at SpaceX or departed.Read full article Comments

Co ciekawe, OSC nie miało rakietowych ambicji.

Jednak w obliczu zakazu wynoszenia komercyjnych satelitów wahadłowcami, końcu programu Scout i fiasku rakiety AMROC nie miała czym wynosić planowanej konstelacji komunikacyjnej Orbcomm.

Latając głównie z satelitami wojska i NASA, rakieta od Orbital pozwoliła w małych misjach satelitarnych, z lekkim naddatkiem, zastąpić rakiety Scout.

Ciekawostka, tak jak Falcon 9 buduje konstelację Starlink, tak Pegasus wynosił dla OSC satelity ich konstelacji Orbcomm.

This might give you an idea of how the Orbcomm network worked. At the time I was working there, we were looking at using the Stellar DS3000 mentioned in the article. We received ground station data from the modems registered to us by email with the data stored as an attachment. Crude, but effective.

The modem we favoured was the Panasonic KX-G7101. It could handle packet data to low Earth orbit via a whip antenna, and had a GPS puck. The Orbcomm network could handle short (a handful of bytes) or long data messages. We tended to use the short messages to flag alerts, like engine warnings.

Not been able to find any of the code I wrote for Remote Area Networks yet. We subcontracted to a company called SpaceTrac. I have found a presentation that they used. I wrote the code that ran on the ground based satellite modems that used the Orbcomm LEO network.

It's frustrating, because some of us lowly non journalists end up connecting the dots, for instance regarding the hack of Orbcomm in September 2023 that affected satellite tracking of lorries all over the world, and does the same for NATO assets.

Imagine you have the first rocket to successfully land in your possession, would you inspect it as thoroughly as possible to gain as much information from it as you can, or would you risk losing it and damaging the pad purely for ego reasons?
