Trump’s coup in Venezuela didn’t just break the rules – it showed there aren’t any. We’ll all regret that | Nesrine Malik
It’s not just the triumphalism in the White House. Leaders loth to oppose this gangsterism must think how that looks to Putin, Xi and in the UAEI never thought it possible that you could look back on the Iraq war, and the foreign invasions of the “war on terror” in general, and feel some measure of nostalgia. For a time when there were at least concerted attempts to justify unilateral interventions and illegal wars in the name of global security, and even a moral duty to liberate the women of Afghanistan or “free the Iraqi people”.Now, as the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, is in essence abducted and Venezuela taken over by the US, there is barely any effort to situate the coup in any reasoning other than the US’s interests. Nor are there any attempts to solicit consent from domestic or international law-making bodies and allies, let alone the public. The days of the US trying to convince the world that Saddam Hussein did in fact have weapons of mass destruction despite secretly having no reliable intelligence were, in fact, the good old days. OpenAI admits AI browsers face unsolvable prompt attacks
Cybercriminals don't always need malware or exploits to break into systems anymore. Sometimes, they just need the right words in the right place. OpenAI is now openly acknowledging that reality. The company says prompt injection attacks against artificial intelligence (AI)-powered browsers are not a bug that can be fully patched, but a long-term risk that comes with letting AI agents roam the open web. This raises uncomfortable questions about how safe these tools really are, especially as they gain more autonomy and access to your data.Sign up for my FREE CyberGuy Report Get my best tech tips, urgent security alerts, and exclusive deals delivered straight to your inbox. Plus, you’ll get instant access to my Ultimate Scam Survival Guide — free when you join my CYBERGUY.COM newsletter. NEW MALWARE CAN READ YOUR CHATS AND STEAL YOUR MONEYIn a recent blog post, OpenAI admitted that prompt injection attacks are unlikely to ever be completely eliminated. Prompt injection works by hiding instructions inside web pages, documents or emails in ways that humans don't notice, but AI agents do. Once the AI reads that content, it can be tricked into following malicious instructions.OpenAI compared this problem to scams and social engineering. You can reduce them, but you can't make them disappear. The company also acknowledged that "agent mode" in its ChatGPT Atlas browser increases risk because it expands the attack surface. The more an AI can do on your behalf, the more damage it can cause when something goes wrong.OpenAI launched the ChatGPT Atlas browser in October, and security researchers immediately started testing its limits. Within hours, demos appeared showing that a few carefully placed words inside a Google Doc could influence how the browser behaved. That same day, Brave published its own warning, explaining that indirect prompt injection is a structural problem for AI-powered browsers, including tools like Perplexity's Comet. This isn't just OpenAI's problem. Earlier this month, the National Cyber Security Centre in the U.K. warned that prompt injection attacks against generative AI systems may never be fully mitigated.FAKE AI CHAT RESULTS ARE SPREADING DANGEROUS MAC MALWAREOpenAI says it views prompt injection as a long-term security challenge that requires constant pressure, not a one-time fix. Its approach relies on faster patch cycles, continuous testing and layered defenses. That puts it broadly in line with rivals like Anthropic and Google, which have both argued that agentic systems need architectural controls and ongoing stress testing.Where OpenAI is taking a different approach is with something it calls an "LLM-based automated attacker." In simple terms, OpenAI trained an AI to act like a hacker. Using reinforcement learning, this attacker bot looks for ways to sneak malicious instructions into an AI agent's workflow. The bot runs attacks in simulation first. It predicts how the target AI would reason, what steps it would take and where it might fail. Based on that feedback, it refines the attack and tries again. Because this system has insight into the AI's internal decision-making, OpenAI believes it can surface weaknesses faster than real-world attackers.Even with these defenses, AI browsers aren't safe. They combine two things attackers love: autonomy and access. Unlike regular browsers, they don't just display information, but also read emails, scan documents, click links and take actions on your behalf. That means a single malicious prompt hidden in a webpage, document or message can influence what the AI does without you ever seeing it. Even when safeguards are in place, these agents operate by trusting content at scale, and that trust can be manipulated.THIRD-PARTY BREACH EXPOSES CHATGPT ACCOUNT DETAILSYou may not be able to eliminate prompt injection attacks, but you can significantly limit their impact by changing how you use AI tools.Only give an AI browser access to what it absolutely needs. Avoid connecting your primary email account, cloud storage or payment methods unless there's a clear reason. The more data an AI can see, the more valuable it becomes to attackers. Limiting access reduces the blast radius if something goes wrong.Never allow an AI browser to send emails, make purchases or modify account settings without asking you first. Confirmation breaks long attack chains and gives you a moment to spot suspicious behavior. Many prompt injection attacks rely on the AI acting quietly in the background without user review.A password manager ensures every account has a unique, strong password. If an AI browser or malicious page leaks one credential, attackers can't reuse it elsewhere. Many password managers also refuse to autofill on unfamiliar or suspicious sites, which can alert you that something isn't right before you manually enter anything.Next, see if your email has been exposed in past breaches. Our #1 password manager (see Cyberguy.com) pick includes a built-in breach scanner that checks whether your email address or passwords have appeared in known leaks. If you discover a match, immediately change any reused passwords and secure those accounts with new, unique credentials.Check out the best expert-reviewed password managers of 2025 at Cyberguy.comEven if an attack starts inside the browser, antivirus software can still detect suspicious scripts, unauthorized system changes or malicious network activity. Strong antivirus software focuses on behavior, not just files, which is critical when dealing with AI-driven or script-based attacks. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices at Cyberguy.comTelling an AI browser to "handle whatever is needed" gives attackers room to manipulate it through hidden prompts. Be specific about what the AI is allowed to do and what it should never do. Narrow instructions make it harder for malicious content to influence the agent. When an AI browser scans emails, documents or web pages for you, remember that hidden instructions can live inside that content. Treat AI-generated actions as drafts or suggestions, not final decisions. Review anything the AI plans to act on before approving it.Security fixes for AI browsers evolve quickly as new attack techniques emerge. Delaying updates leaves known weaknesses open longer than necessary. Turning on automatic updates ensures you get protection as soon as they're available, even if you miss the announcement. There's been a meteoric rise in AI browsers. We're now seeing them from major tech companies, including OpenAI's Atlas, The Browser Company's Dia and Perplexity's Comet. Even existing browsers like Chrome and Edge are pushing hard to add AI and agentic features into their current infrastructure. While these browsers can be useful, the technology is still early. It's best not to fall for the hype and to wait for it to mature.Do you think AI browsers are worth the risk today, or are they moving faster than security can keep up? Labor and Albanese take a hit in post-Bondi Resolve poll
Despite fallout from the expenses scandal and Bondi, Labor still holds a 54–46 lead in Resolve, but Anthony Albanese’s ratings have slumped. Newspoll analysis has One Nation’s surge concentrated with voters of lower educational attainment. A special national Resolve poll for Nine newspapers, conducted after the Bondi attacks on December 17–20 from a sample of 1,010 (well below the normal Resolve sample size of 1,800), gave Labor a 54–46 lead by respondent preferences, a one-point gain for the Coalition since the regular early December Resolve poll. Primary votes were 32% Labor (down three), 28% Coalition (up two), 16% One Nation (up two), 12% Greens (up one), 8% independents (steady) and 4% others (down two). By 2025 election preference flows, Labor would have led by under 54–46, about a 2.5-point gain for the Coalition. Albanese’s net approval slumped 15 points to -9, the lowest it has been in this poll since the May election, with 49% giving him a poor rating and 40% a good rating. Sussan Ley’s net approval also fell seven points to -4. Albanese led Ley as preferred PM by 38–30 (41–26 in early December). There had been stories about the expenses scandal in the week before the Bondi attacks, and the Morgan poll below had Labor dropping on the expenses scandal. It’s not clear whether Albanese and Labor were damaged by the expenses, Bondi or both. By 46–29, respondents in Resolve thought the federal government’s response to Bondi was weak rather than strong. By 37–30, they thought social cohesion was good rather than poor. By 72–9, respondents thought there had been a rise in racism in Australia as a result of the Israel-Gaza conflict (69–12 when this question was last asked in January 2025). By 55–13, they thought there had been more antisemitism than Islamophobia in recent months (54–9 last January). On gun laws, 76% wanted them to be toughened, 10% kept as they are and just 6% thought they should be relaxed. Four of five proposals for toughening gun laws had over 80% support, with “restrict gun licences to Australian citizens” the exception at 72% support. Asked to pick two priorities for the government, 49% selected preventing terrorism, 45% tackling crime generally, 35% restricting access to guns, 33% preventing extremism, 29% tackling antisemitism and 26% tackling hate speech. By 66–9, respondents thought Australia needs stronger laws to ban hate speech on the basis of religion and faith. The most popular proposal for tackling antisemitism was tougher immigration screening to identify antisemitic views (76–7 support). Holding a Royal Commission was at 48–17 support. In the small New South Wales subsample of around 300 voters, Labor Premier Chris Minns’ net likeability jumped eight points since November to +22. In a post-Bondi YouGov national poll that was conducted December 15–22 from a sample of 1,509, 44% wanted personal guns like those used in the attacks made illegal, 48% wanted tighter gun laws and just 8% wanted no change to gun laws. By 81–19, respondents thought Ahmed al Ahmed, who disarmed one of the Bondi gunmen, deserved to be made Australian of the Year. Labor slides in Morgan poll after expenses scandal Morgan released its November 17 to December 14 national poll broken into two periods. For the first three weeks, November 17 to December 7, Labor had a 56–44 lead, similar to the 56.5–43.5 Labor lead in October to November. For the last week, December 8–14 with a one-week sample of 1,574, Labor’s lead dropped to 54.5–45.5 by respondent preferences, a 1.5-point gain for the Coalition from weeks 1–3. Primary votes were 30.5% Labor (down 2.5), 27.5% Coalition (up 1.5), 17% One Nation (up two), 13% Greens (down 0.5) and 12% for all Others (down 0.5). By 2025 election preference flows, Labor would have led by about 53–47, the lowest Labor lead by this measure of any poll since the last election. The Redbridge poll suggested Labor had not been damaged by the expenses claims, but this poll contradicts that. All interviews were conducted before the Bondi attacks. Read more: Labor maintains dominant lead in Redbridge poll despite expenses claims The full four-week poll had a sample of 4,862. In state and demographic breakdowns, the Coalition regained the lead in Queensland by 50.5–49.5, but Labor led in the other five states. Labor led by 58.5–41.5 with women and 52.5–47.5 with men. Labor led by 69.5–30.5 with those aged 18–34 and by 58.5–41.5 with those aged 35–49. The Coalition made its biggest gains with those aged 50–64 to lead by 50.5–49.5, a 4.5-point swing to the Coalition. The Coalition led with those aged 65 and over by 54.5–45.5. One Nation’s highest support was with those aged 50–64 (20.5%) and they had 22% in Queensland. Newspoll aggregate data for September to November The Australian released aggregate data for the three national Newspolls conducted between September 29 and November 20 on December 26. The total sample size was 3,774, with Labor holding an overall 57–43 lead. These polls were taken before the expenses scandal and Bondi. Labor led by 58–42 in NSW, (a two-point gain for the Coalition since the September quarter Newspoll aggregate according to The Poll Bludger), 60–40 in Victoria (a two-point gain for Labor), 52–48 in Queensland (a one-point gain for Labor), 56–44 in Western Australia (a two-point gain for Labor) and 58–42 in South Australia (a three-point gain for Labor). Among those without a tertiary education, primary votes were 30% Labor (down two), 26% Coalition (down six), 20% One Nation (up nine) and 14% Greens (up one), for an unchanged 53–47 Labor lead. With TAFE educated, primary votes were 35% Labor (down two), 24% Coalition (down one), 19% One Nation (up seven) and 9% Greens (steady) for a 54–46 Labor lead (a three-point gain for the Coalition). However, with the university educated, primary votes were 41% Labor (up three), 26% Coalition (down three), 13% Greens (down two) and 6% One Nation (up one), for a 62–38 Labor lead (a two-point gain for Labor). Resolve likeabilty poll Resolve’s poll of net likeability of federal politicians was taken in early December, before Bondi and the expenses scandal. Only two politicians had negative net likeability: Lidia Thorpe (-12) and Barnaby Joyce (-4). Net likeability of prominent Labor politicians were Chris Bowen (net zero), Murray Watt (+4), Jim Chalmers (+5), Richard Marles (+6), Tony Burke (+7), Tanya Plibersek (+9) and Penny Wong (+11). David Pocock and Jacqui Lambie were on top with both at +15. Greens leader Larissa Waters was at +5. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson’s net likeability increased 16 points since December 2024 to +3, but was down five points since November. Joyce’s net likeability was up 18 since December 2024 and up four since November. Thorpe’s net likeability surged 29 points since December 2024. Only one politician suffered a fall in net likeability since December 2024: Liberal Jacinta Price was down five points to +3. “Can’t Recognize Anyone”: Film Icon Dame Judi Dench Shares Heartbreaking Health Confession
Dame Judi Dench has shared a devastating new update on her health, revealing that her condition has worsened to the point where she can no longer recognize the faces of her loved ones. The 90-year-old screen legend opened up about the decline with raw honesty, leaving fans stunned and deeply concerned. Social media was quickly flooded with messages of sympathy and support, with one fan writing, “This is so sad to hear.” Dame Judi Dench was diagnosed with a degenerative condition back in 2012, and it now appears to have taken a significant toll on her overall well-being Image credits: Karwai Tang/WireImage In a recent interview, she appeared alongside her colleague of 50 years, Sir Ian McKellen, to promote a new Shakespeare teaching resource. While speaking with ITV News, Dame Judi Dench was asked why she has stepped away from the film industry in recent years, her last roles being in the 2022 films Spirited and Allelujah. She attributed her absence to her age-related eye condition, saying, “No, because I can’t see anymore.” Image credits: 20th Century Studios Her friend Ian tried to lighten the mood by joking, “But we can see you,” prompting Judi to add, “Yes, and I can see your outline, and I know you so well with your Macbeth scarf.” She then revealed the heartbreaking extent of her condition, “But I can’t recognize anyone… I can’t see. I can’t see the television, can’t see to read.” “I can’t see anymore,” the Oscar-winning actress told during a recent interview alongside her longtime friend and colleague Sir Ian McKellen Image credits: ITVNews In 2012, Judi was diagnosed with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of permanent sight loss in people over 50. The progressive eye condition severely damages the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. AMD often leads to blurred or reduced central vision, distorted straight lines, and a persistent blurry spot, making everyday tasks increasingly difficult for older adults. Image credits: Searchlight Pictures This decline has significantly affected Dench’s ability to work in recent years. The condition is classified into two types, dry AMD and wet AMD, with no known cure available for the dry form. It also remains unclear which type of AMD the Pride and Prejudice star is living with. Judi has Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a condition that progressively worsens with age and can eventually result in eyesight loss Image credits: ITVNews Elsewhere in the interview, Ian teased her by asking, “Do you go up to total strangers and just say to them “lovely to see you again?’” Judi replied with a laugh, “Yes sometimes!” Her latest health update has sparked concern among fans, many of whom took to social media to express their support and well-wishes. One user wrote, “Such a shame, but if anyone can deal with something like this it’s her. She’s an absolute powerhouse and the best of us.” Image credits: OfficialGrahamNorton Another said, “No no no, not one of my favourite actors, I hate it when we lose so many icons, why?” A third chimed in, “Bless her. She has been dealing with the loss of her eyesight for a while now… Enjoy your retirement Dame Judy, you have earned it.” Dench has not appeared on the big screen in the past three years, with her last film roles released in 2022 Image credits: ITVNews “Our dad had that before he passed.. so sad watching her go through it. sending her my prayers.” During a 2021 event for the London-based Vision Foundation, Dench had previously opened up about her struggles with the condition, revealing how it was affecting both her career and daily life. She told the interviewer, “I’ve had to find another way of learning lines and things, which is having great friends of mine repeat them to me over and over and over again.” Image credits: Sony Pictures “So I have to learn through repetition, and I just hope that people won’t notice too much if all the lines are completely hopeless!” The Victoria & Abdul star also expressed her gratitude for her daughter, Finty Williams, who often helped her by reciting lines. With a remarkable career spanning 70 years since her 1957 debut, Judi never wanted to “retire,” but her health ultimately forced her to slow down Image credits: Chris Jackson – Pool/Getty Images Later, speaking at the Chelsea Flower Show in May 2024, Judi admitted she had been working “as much as” she could but was now finding most roles “difficult” to take on. She explained, “I have so many friends who will teach me the script. But I have a photographic memory, so I have to know where it is on the page, and that’s quite a difficult thing.” In a separate appearance on Louis Theroux’s BBC show, Dench firmly stated, “I don’t want to retire.” “[But] I’m not doing much at the moment because I can’t see. It’s bad.” While the 90-year-old has stepped back from major acting roles for now, she did make a return to the small screen in a 2024 Christmas advert. “My heart goes out to Dame Judy Dench… How sad is this. Such a beautiful lady, how cruel life can be at times,” wrote one user

Another wrote, “Looks like Brad has some chin & jaw fillers, not good, changes his whole look.” “Brad hasn’t looked good since he started dating this girl,” said another. “So…everyone is dressed nicely, but Pitt looks like he just rolled out of bed,” read one comment online Image credits: LIVE ABC News Brad and Ines were romantically linked since 2022 and made their red carpet debut at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. They have been seen hand-in-hand at public events on several occasions. The couple recently moved into a new home and are now “fully living together,” sources said. “Brad is really including Ines in all his travel plans, and when they are home, they just relax together,” a source told People. “They are really making their home into a home.” A second source said the couple is “happier than ever,” and their relationship is “going really strong.” “He’s so happy and in love,” the insider said. The couple recently moved into a new home and are now “fully living together,” a source said The couple’s latest appearance came days after Brad took legal action against ex-wife Angelina Jolie in their ongoing legal battle over the French winery, Château Miraval. On October 29, the actor’s legal team submitted evidence of communications to and from the Oscar-winning actress’s team regarding her 2021 sale of her stake in the winery they co-owned. The 286-page filing includes email exchanges between the Malificent actress and her counsel. “I need to remove all stress,” the actress wrote in an email to her business manager in May, 2021. “I honestly feel I am getting sick from worry. So I would like us to discuss better support. And not continuing relationships that you see cause me stress,” she added. The recent 286-page filing was reportedly part of Brad’s legal team’s efforts to obtain copies of Angelina’s email communications over the 2021 sale of the winery. The former couple tied the knot at the very same winery in 2014 in the presence of their six children, Maddox, now 24, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and 17-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. They parted ways in 2016 and finalized their lengthy divorce in December, 2024. The movie Jay Kelly tells the story of a movie star, played by George Clooney, who goes on a journey of self-discovery through Europe and confronts his past and present with his manager, played by Adam Sandler. The film will hit theaters on November 14 and release on Netflix on December 5. Netizens had plenty to say about Brad Pitt and Ines de Ramon’s recent appearance

Oracle slides by most since January on mounting AI spending
Oracle Corp. shares plunged the most in almost 11 months after the company escalated its spending on AI data centers and other equipment, rising outlays that are taking longer to translate into cloud revenue than investors want. Capital expenditures, a metric of data center spending, were about $12 billion in the quarter, an increase from $8.5 billion in the preceding period, the company said Wednesday in a statement. Analysts anticipated $8.25 billion in capital spending in the quarter, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.  Oracle now expects capital expenditures will reach about $50 billion in the fiscal year ending in May 2026 — a $15 billion increase from its September forecast — executives said on a conference call after the results were released. The shares fell 11% to $198.85 at the close Thursday in New York, the biggest single-day decline since Jan. 27. Oracle’s stock had already lost about a third of its value through Wednesday’s close since a record high on Sept. 10. Meanwhile, a measure of Oracle’s credit risk reached a fresh 16-year high. The latest earning report and share slide marks a reversal of fortunes for a company that just a few months ago was enjoying a blistering rally and clinching multibillion-dollar data center deals with the likes of OpenAI. The gains temporarily turned co-founder Larry Ellison into the world’s richest person, with the tech magnate passing Elon Musk for a few hours. Known for its database software, Oracle has recently found success in the competitive cloud computing market. It’s engaging in a massive data center build-out to power AI work for OpenAI and also counts companies such as ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok and Meta Platforms Inc. as major cloud customers.  Fiscal second-quarter cloud sales increased 34% to $7.98 billion, while revenue in the company’s closely watched infrastructure business gained 68% to $4.08 billion. Both numbers fell just short of analysts’ estimates.Play Video Still, Wall Street has raised doubts about the costs and time required to develop AI infrastructure at such a massive scale. Oracle has taken out significant sums of debt and committed to leasing multiple data center sites.  The cost of protecting the company’s debt against default for five years rose as much as 0.17 percentage point to around 1.41 percentage point a year, the highest intraday level since April 2009, according to ICE Data Services. The gauge rises as investor confidence in the company’s credit quality falls. Oracle credit derivatives have become a credit market barometer for AI risk. “Oracle faces its own mounting scrutiny over a debt-fueled data center build-out and concentration risk amid questions over the outcome of AI spending uncertainty,” said Jacob Bourne, an analyst at Emarketer. “This revenue miss will likely exacerbate concerns among already cautious investors about its OpenAI deal and its aggressive AI spending.” Remaining performance obligation, a measure of bookings, jumped more than fivefold to $523 billion in the quarter, which ended Nov. 30. Analysts, on average, estimated $519 billion. Investors want to see Oracle turn its higher spending on infrastructure into revenue as quickly as it has promised.  “The vast majority of our cap ex investments are for revenue generating equipment that is going into our data centers and not for land, buildings or power that collectively are covered via leases,” Principal Financial Officer Doug Kehring said on the call. “Oracle does not pay for these leases until the completed data centers and accompanying utilities are delivered to us.” “As a foundational principle, we expect and are committed to maintaining our investment grade debt rating,” Kehring added. Oracle’s cash burn increased in the quarter and its free cash flow reached a negative $10 billion. Overall, the company has about $106 billion in debt, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. “Investors continually seem to expect incremental cap ex to drive incremental revenue faster than the current reality,” wrote Mark Murphy, an analyst at JP Morgan.Play Video “Oracle is very good at building and running high-performance and cost-efficient cloud data centers,” Clay Magouyrk, one of Oracle’s two chief executive officers, said in the statement. “Because our data centers are highly automated, we can build and run more of them.” This is Oracle’s first earnings report since longtime Chief Executive Officer Safra Catz was succeeded by Magouyrk and Mike Sicilia, who are sharing the CEO post. Part of the negative sentiment from investors in recent weeks is tied to increased skepticism about the business prospects of OpenAI, which is seeing more competition from companies like Alphabet Inc.’s Google, wrote Kirk Materne, an analyst at Evercore ISI, in a note ahead of earnings. Investors would like to see Oracle management explain how they could adjust spending plans if demand from OpenAI changes, he added. In the quarter, total revenue expanded 14% to $16.1 billion. The company’s cloud software application business rose 11% to $3.9 billion. This is the first quarter that Oracle’s cloud infrastructure unit generated more sales than the applications business. Earnings, excluding some items, were $2.26 a share. The profit was helped by the sale of Oracle’s holdings in chipmaker Ampere Computing, the company said. That generated a pretax gain of $2.7 billion in the period. Ampere, which was backed early in its life by Oracle, was bought by Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp. in a transaction that closed last month. In the current period, which ends in February, total revenue will increase 19% to 22%, while cloud sales will increase 40% to 44%, Kehring said on the call. Both forecasts were in line with analysts’ estimates. Annual revenue will be $67 billion, affirming an outlook the company gave in October. This story was originally featured on Fortune.com
