*I learned about the NAACP's legal strategy from a PBS documentary on Brown.

Morton was progressive on race where Lovecraft was conservative; James F. Morton was an early member of the NAACP and had authored a tract on "The Curse of Race Prejudice" which you can still read today. They were in a discussion on such matters when HPL brought Keith's polygenism into it.

I think the visceral disgust we rightly react to it with today makes it like trying to study an eclipse with the naked eye—it is literally impossible for me to get in this headspace.

This. This and then two decades later, the NAACP protested this and Gone with the Wind. It is rare that you don't see a piece of film or art that had a big cultural impact and had large components that were racist where contemporary people did not protest or at minimum write about and critique.
one thing that is important to know is that BIRTH OF A NATION is so racist that people at the *time*, in 1915, were like, “holy shit this is racist”
When the slightest bit of research shows he was consistently racist and a daddy issues Confederate fanboy.

People try to paint BIRTH OF A NATION as a masterpiece with some unfortunate racism. The whole movie is racist, the “masterpiece “ thing was backfilled to excuse it.

I remember that once on Twitter someone told me that Song of the South is “now considered racist,” so I looked it up and sure enough, the NAACP had picketed the premiere.

People in the olden days had eyes.

LUBBOCK, Texas — The meeting of the local NAACP chapter began with a prayer — and then the litany of injustices came pouring out. A Black high school football player was called a “b—h-ass” n-word during a game by white players in September with no consequence, his mom said. A Black 12-year-old boy, falsely accused last December of touching a white girl’s breast, was threatened and interrogated by a police officer at school without his parents and sentenced to a disciplinary alternative school for a month, his grandfather recounted. A Black honors student was wrongly accused by a white teacher of having a vape (it was a pencil sharpener) and sentenced to the alternative school for a month this fall, her mom said.
