(MMKaye was my big “she researched so much” writer as a teen, but her work is inherently colonialist and while she does dive into the messiness at times, it was often with mixed results that gave her white English & American characters more complexity than the PoC folks around them.)

You CAN hear the uneven nature, the messiness, the human in the art. It’s not one of my favorite bass/drum lines of all time but it is up there- the drums for happiness is a warm gun- they often dissolve into a hot mess, lol. And I love that! I love every single second of it.
