I see an occasional bus pulling up in Mauchline with visitors looking for Burns Heritage. There is a small museum but the rest of the town is embarrassing /

Burns based his poem about holy Willie on a real character from the village of Mauchline who, despite his piety, was occasionally found lying in the graveyard in a drunken stupor and got at least one of the local teenage girls pregnant.

By chance, I met this ancient oak near Mauchline, Ayrshire. My hiking pole on the right gives an idea of girth.
Trees this age and size are so rare in Ireland that this would be celebrated. But in Scotland, they seem no big deal.
