#Khaemweset
Mira, pues una noticia que me alegra el día, oh abuelo del gran Khaemweset

One of the most impactful stories about history I read as a child was that of Khaemweset, or "Setne Chaemwase" as that version Romanized it. An archaeologist who studied ancient Egypt.

Khaemweset lived 3000 years ago, in *our* ancient Egypt, and studied the 2000+ years preceding his time.
3/3...that archaeology isn't limited to "alien ruins" or "ancient Earth". And it paid off in terms of world building because it not only added depth to the setting, it opened up more narrative pathways by not having a 100% documented and known history, even in space.

Loved it.

(Pedantic voice) Per Wikipedia:
"Khaemweset has been described as 'the first Egyptologist' due to his efforts in identifying and restoring historic buildings, tombs and temples."
As he lived c. 1281 BCE - 1225 BCE archaeologists were definitely a thing back then 🤓

Along these lines, the person called “the first Egyptologist” was Prince Khaemweset, who lived in the 1200s BCE.

He led the restoration of earlier pyramids and other monuments that were, at that point, already 1200-1400 years old.

"the first egyptologist" (very pop term, but still) was an ancient egyptian prince (Prince Khaemweset) researching what to him was ancient egypt's history.

It's true! Khaemweset. And he made such an impression on his fellow Egyptians that hundreds of years after his death somebody wrote fan fiction casting him as an Indiana Jones–esque adventurer.
My favorite Ancient Egypt fact is the reason we know who was buried in the Old Kingdom's pyramids is a nerdy son of Ramses the Great in the New Kingdom was worried people would forget who was buried in them, so he made sure they were labeled and signs put up.

Meryapi has clearly been inside Unas's pyramid -- which makes sense, the Old Kingdom pyramid was a VERY popular New Kingdom-era tourist destination, and her uncle Khaemweset was a well-known renovator of sites who may also have stolen grave goods to fund the Ramesside era for his dad Ramesses II.

In Egyptian folklore, great heroes are often wise magicians instead of warriors. One of the most prominent was Setne Khamwas. He was based on the historical Prince Khaemweset, who was fascinated by Egypt's history and restored many ancient tombs and temples.

#HistorysFirstArchaeologist: We got a winner!

#Nabonidus, King of Babylon takes the trophy home.

But #Khaemweset delivered an exciting and close run, in particular in the last quarter. So, who knows, maybe they sooner or later agree on a return match ...

While the archaeological interest of both, #Khaemweset and #Nabonidus, likely rather followed political and religious tracks, they're both attributed with a certain historical curiosity - and both have been named "#HistorysFirstArchaeologist".

So, choose your player. 😉

Is it #Khaemweset, the ancient Egyptian crown prince (1281-1225 BC) who uncovered and restored ancient monuments of past rulers and renewed their funerary cults?

Crown Prince #Khaemweset seems to have been a bit of a 'cleaner' following his father's (Ramesses II) building projects (using older monuments as quarries), restoring the funerary cults of earlier kings, leaving a number of restoration texts ...
