Hell when coming up with Victoria's lore proper one thing remained constant despite all the scrapped ideas and retcons. Haurchefant and Ysayle dying are why she learns how to wield a Gunblade. Going from hotblooded tomboy that liked punching things to a sworn protector.
For as much as SE has milked it I still firmly believe Haurchefant's death is the modern day equivalent of Aerith's death from FF7. Sure his death doesn't have the same pop culture impact because XIV is an MMO, but holy shit did him dying have a huge effect on the fan base.
